Compared to our neighbors like the UK, “there is an explosion of prices” while in France, electricity prices “should have increased by 40% this year”. “We blocked the increase to 4%. In gas they should have increased to 100% and we also blocked that increase”, insisted Gabriel Attal, referring to the tariff shield.

No gesture to push the train

To cope with rising fuel prices, Spain has been offering a free rail pass for regional trains since September 1. Almost 500,000 people have already applied. And this summer, Germany made available a package of unlimited trains at 9 euros per month.

On the French train side, there is no action on the agenda. Ticket prices have still risen 15% in a year, according to INSEE. Recognizing that many people cannot pay the price of a ticket in one go, SNCF limited itself to mentioning the possibility of paying multiple times.

Instead of encouraging people to take the train, the French government preferred to give a discount at the pump, increased from 18 cents to 30 cents on September 1, to help those who take their car to refuel.
