In the first scene of Fatty fish, the Chaco series broadcast by UN3, Abel and César prepare a fishing trip. They set out on a rickety Red Dune to buy worms, rent a canoe and head for the river. They don’t come back with a surubí, much less with a dorado. But the prize is much bigger: entangled in some camalotes, they find bags with about 100 kilos of marijuana.
What will they do with that drug? How would their lives change if they could sell it? Isn’t that the luck they needed to get out of misery? All these questions are asked by Abel and César, respectively a taxi driver and an employee of a bicycle shop, in the first few minutes of the twelve-episode serieswith the production of Lacandona Cine and the support of INCAA.
The work of Yoni Czombos and Roly Ruiz, who derives from having won some prizes in international festivalshas from the initial minute a coastal identity stamp.
Filming was shot on the sets of Barranqueras and Puerto Vilelas (Chaco), but they could very well be other towns or small towns on the banks of the Paraná. photograph by William Rovira and the art of Romina Vlachof they manage to create a precise atmosphere of that regionpossibly related to the literature of Carlos Busqued.
During the episodes, Abel will try to get out of evil thanks to that stroke of luck. César, older and with less desire for trouble, will try to take off, but maybe not that much.
The taxi driver will take the first steps – all false and quite clumsy – to enter the world of drug dealing. This is how the characters of commerce, the Police, the commissioner and the company executives will appear, always with a background of povertyDunes, ramshackle, small displacement bikes e the river as the protagonist.
The cast consists of actors of Chaco and Corrientes. In the leading role, Francesco Quintana gives truth to the character of Abel, a boy who wants to get out of poverty and finds a good escape route in drugs. “I’m rotten from living in misery, friend …”he says in one of the episodes. He makes a man of few words and stubborn in his plan for himself.
The characters of Lorena Palavecino and Horacio Fernández are good companions in adventures, albeit at times the latter abuses the resource of anger and puteada.
Drug-related series production is prolific on the platforms of streamingfrom the essential breaking Bad a Weeds, to name but a few; in the latter, in fact, the story is told of a person who throws himself into the world of drugs to earn money and support his family.
Within that tradition, Fatty fish your village looks good, but maybe it fails in the dramatic intensity of the characters and the lack of surprises in its narrative arcwhich goes from one starting point to another ending point without major surprises, and also with some reassuring and moralizing conclusions.
Despite these details, the series doesn’t just entertainbut it also comes to provide a vision of the world and landscapes that come from other latitudes and they escape the Porteño-centric production scheme.
