new work? Interdisciplinary work? Contemporary musical theater? Post-lyric? inclusive work? These questions are part of the fourth edition of the Festival Nueva Ópera Buenos Aires, which will take place from 8 to 29 October.
During the 22 days that the festival lasts, you will see fourteen works distributed in eleven spaces of the City of Buenos Aires. The works investigate the genre of the work from different formats and perspectives: shows, video opera, sspecific to the objecta meeting on the roof of the Museum of Fine Arts and a work that invites you to visit the city are among the proposals.
Since its inception, the biannual Festival has been dedicated to the new aesthetic of the work and was fueled by the most important works of the scholarship holders of the “Winter School”, part of the Festival project, as well as by the main works of the most radical creators of the genre. It began in the Centro de Experimentación of the Teatro Colón, under the direction of Miguel Galperinand currently enjoys institutional autonomy.
The 2022 edition
Galperín referred to the current edition, underlining that “it is a meeting of artists and the public around a commitment supported by the Williams Foundation: that of rethink the work as a current means of expression“.
And he continued: “But it is the peculiarities of this project that unites us today for this program, with the following axes: bridging the gap between the training and the profession of its young artists, associating the companies and ensembles that are renewing the genre and supporting the presentation of a corpus of unforgettable and risky works so that it is also the public, or finally, the one who rediscovers the work ”.
The Festival opens with three shows at the Experimentation Center of the Teatro Colón (CETC): machines like me by Sebastiano Vera Nooper by Agustina Crespo, and travel diaries by Santiago Villalba.
The first is an essay on consciousness in the form of experimental work, composed for 3D printer, ensemble, soprano, texts and images.
For its part, NooperCrespo’s work is instrumental, written specifically for the Dal Niente Ensemble, and explores the construction of meaning from the abstraction of sound.
Why do we choose some things / ideas / materials over others? How and in what context do we choose them ?, asks Villalba in travel diarieshis work -product of a work of collecting, drifting and editing- and, taking up the documentary by Agnes Varda The gleaners and the gleanerexplores the action of collecting as an activity before the consolidation of capitalism.
The festival closes in Planta Inclán with Blood traction algorithmsfrom Nicholas Varchausky: a voice teaches three musicians how to better manage their forces and correct their postures to become more efficient, but the bodies have to decide: if there is ergonomics, there is no performance.
In the middle, Works for ceilingsby Aldo Benítez and Andrés Ruiz, a staging site specific (designed for that place) on the Terrace of the National Museum of Fine Arts.
