That number includes anyone who has watched at least one episode of the final season on UK TV, since its premiere at 8am local time on the platform.

The 1.1 trillion viewers figure does not include viewers who watched on their laptop, tablet or mobile phone.. In other words, the number is certainly much higher.

Data from the UK’s BARB (the Broadcasters Audience Research Board), meanwhile, showed that 666,000 viewers stayed to watch the second episode and around 300,000 stayed to watch the third.

So, based on these measurements, the fourth episode garnered around 147,000 viewers, while the fifth fell below the 100,000 mark and clocked in at 66,000 viewers.

The measurements also recorded around 100 viewers in the UK, presumably, watching the entire ten-episode season on the same day it premiered. Absolute fans of the series.

Experts say this new season of The crown, launched two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, will significantly boost viewership over the weekend. The longest-serving ruler of the United Kingdom died last September at the age of 96, after 70 years of reign.

Confirmed numbers

Usually secretive about its viewing figures, Netflix confirmed these numbers which had been officially registered with the UK’s UK ratings body BARB. And many say that this attitude is part of an advertising tactic, moreover, to support the launch of one of his most successful series.

The crownwhich fictionalizes the life of the British royal family, in its new season stars Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce, as Philip of Edinburgh, and Dominic West, as Prince Charles, now King Charles III. In addition, Olivia Williams plays Camilla Parker Bowles, the current queen consort, and Elizabeth Debicki, playing Lady Di, a key character.

This fifth season is based on the events related to the British crown that have taken place since the early 90s. And it has several flavors, outside of fiction, that generate more expectations than its predecessors.

In addition to being the first season without Elizabeth II and without Philip of Edinburgh, who died on April 9, 2021, the episodes also focus on the figure of Lady Di, married and then divorced from the then Prince Charles, and tragically disappeared in August 1997.

Regardless of the audience figures of The crownthe series has become a flagship offering for the platform, with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos saying during the world premiere ceremony in London this week that “since when The crown premiered in 2016, the series is the crown jewel on Netflix,” using a pun. “We are incredibly proud,” he added.

“This truly was and continues to be the highlight of my personal and professional life,” said Sarandos. “And I am incredibly in awe of the vision that its creator, Peter Morgan, had and the writing of him. And I’m also super grateful for their friendship.”
