What is it all about? thriller was originally composed as starlight by a certain Rod Temperton and the notable Quincy Jones. In the chorus of the song sounded Starlight! Starry sun... and not “Thriller In the night”, but at the last moment, and with young Michael’s opinion, the part of the song was changed, and this did not happen until it was decided thriller as the definitive name for the flagship album in pop history.
The fact is that that lesser-known song has been included in the commemorative disc that sees the light this Friday.
thriller It was Jackson’s sixth studio album and contains iconic songs like the one that gives it its name, as well as stainless hits like billyjean or run away. The album became the best-selling album of all time with 100 million copies worldwide to date, according to Sony Music data.
Produced by Quincy Jones and Jackson himself, seven of the album’s nine tracks were released as singles and – this is touching – all charted. Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The joy of making music
The clip was another before-and-after chapter in the early music video industry: thriller, directed by John Landis, was a game changer which is why it won the Grammy for Best Music Video in 1984 along with seven other awards won that year alone. Critics defined that record as “the joy of making music”.
Also among the new material on the album released today are two songs previously collected on the posthumous album Michael (2010): The original psychopath demo behind the mask and an early version of better than joywhich was conceived as a song for the film The toy (His Favorite Toy) from 1982.
There are also completely unreleased cuts and broken songs like She is a problem or What a way to gowhich was about to be included in the aforementioned posthumous album, after having passed through the hands of the producer Marco Ronsonalthough it ultimately did not make it into the repertoire.
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of its release, the album will be the subject of events around the world such as the art exhibitions with immersive experiences that took place in Dusseldorf from 10 to 13 November and in New York from 18 to 20 November.
Added to these are the exclusive screenings of the new documentary thrillers 40with eight unique functions in eight cities around the world, including Madrid, on November 30th.
thrillers 40 It will appear in three formats: vinyl with a new alternative cover, double CD with a dozen additional tracks and in a digital version which, in addition to this content, will include 15 remixes.
