The success or failure of a fiction sometimes depends the time and country where it premieres, as well as the channel or platform that broadcasts it. A test bench that confirms this hypothesis is that of the soap opera Until money do us part.
East typical Colombian soap opera with Carmen Villalobos and Sebastián Martínez premiered on the local channel RCN and on Telemundo Estados Unidos -for the Latin American audience of that country- in May of this year.
Even if a priori there were a lot of expectations with this remake of a 2006 strip, the novel did not get the expected rating level. Colombian audiences immediately compared it to the original and RCN sought to revitalize it by moving it into its programme. There was no case: as the chapters went by, it was forgotten.
But the story would have revenge at the hands of Netflix. On October 19, the mother platform of the stream rerun Until money do us part, becoming furious at a genre that is giving him great results.
Suffice it to mention productions that, despite having been out for some time, continue to accumulate reproductions, such as coffee with the scent of a woman, the queen of flow or The Passion of the HawksThat It was in the top 10 most watched series on Netflix Argentina for 70 weeks.
The gamble paid off: with 46.6 million views, the novel topped the platform’s global rankings in the non-English speaking series category for the fourth consecutive week.
Plus, it’s by far the most watched series in Argentina, Spain and 16 other countriesand intends to follow in the footsteps of coffee with the scent of a womanwhich occupies that world top ten 26 weeks ago.
A simple and effective plot
As mentioned, Until money do us part It is based on the 2006 telenovela of the same name produced and created by Fernando Gaitánthe screenwriter who disappeared in 2019 and who left real global phenomena, like hers coffee with the scent of a woman Y I’m Ugly Betty, considered by the Guinness Book as the most successful soap opera in history.
Designed as a daily stripthe 85 episodes have a plot that is as elementary and universal as it is effective, almost a requirement for every soap opera: the low-income young man trying to win over the high-society girl.
“Alejandra Maldonado (Villalobos, the villain of Coffee flavor…) and Rafael Méndez (Martínez) come from opposite worlds and are the protagonists of an unconventional love story.
“A car accident seals their destinies and, since that day, their lives have never been the same. The accident, of large proportions, leaves a million dollar debt and a contract emerges that binds and tests them, forming a love-hate relationship that grows stronger every day,” reads the official synopsis for the series.
“A spark strikes between Alejandra and Rafael and circumstances magically change. He is overwhelmed by her jealousy ‘bow tie’ and leave it behind; she is heartbroken by the coldness of her boyfriend, Luciano (Gregory Pernia), a lover of feminine perfection who can’t get over the wounds and scars left by the accident. The thirst for revenge tests the protagonists”, closes the summary.
The argument sounds anachronistic in these times of streaming in which more realistic stories abound and with production levels closer to cinema. But the numbers do not lie and cast a certainty: there is a large audience that still adores classic melodramasIt doesn’t matter when or where.
