A Chinese court in Beijing has sentenced Chris WuChinese-Canadian pop star also known as Wu Yifan, a 13 years in prison after finding him guilty of sex crimes, including rape, the court said on his official Weibo account.
Wu rose to prominence as a member of EXO, a popular Korean-Chinese pop group, then continued as a solo artist after leaving the band in 2014.
The Chaoyang District People’s Court in Beijing stated that between November 2020 and December 2020, the singer raped three women at his residence when they could not or did not know how to resist due to alcohol intoxication; and in July 2018, along with others involved, he arranged for two women to engage in “promiscuous activities” while drunk at his residence.
The court convicted Wu of rape and of mafia intending to engage in promiscuous activities and sentenced him to 11.5 years and 22 months, respectively. The court decided on a 13-year fixed-term sentence.
The sentence was witnessed by officials from the Canadian embassy in China.
Wu will be deported after his sentence ends, the court said.
The arrest
Wu was formally arrested on rape charges in August last year, after he was first detained by police in July 2021 in the Chinese capital, following an online protest over sexual assault allegations against him in what has become the highest profile #MeToo case in China.
Separately, the Beijing Municipal Revenue Agency fined Wu RMB 600 million (about 83.8 million US dollars) for tax evasion, according to an agency statement released on Friday.
