There’s King Kong, there’s Godzilla, you can even have them fight in a movie (Godzilla vs. Kong) and they will in another (Godzilla and Kongplanned for 2024). There is the T-Rex from the sagas of Jurassic Park Y jurassic worldand make room for Trol, the “protagonist” of this Norwegian production which is already the most watched film in Netflix in Argentina.
It is a big monster and stomps. Enough to leave footprints on the earth, and leave the unbelievers speechless.
Because Trolls, apparently, are like Santa Claus and the Magi. I’m a legend, I’m a myth, a belief, but in movies they can be real (restless nightpublished this Thursday, is an example of this).
The film also has supernatural elements, but also talks about Nature with a capital N, dinosaurs and legends.
before the unknown
And how a society reacts to the unknown and what is amazing about it. Between science and popular beliefs.
Even because troll It’s also a movie to watch as a family, it’s anchored in the lost relationship between a father and his daughter.
Tobias Tidemann has always believed in trolls. As we see in the prologue, 20 years ago, when he climbs the side of a peak with his daughter Nora, and “shows” several trolls on the side of a mountain range.
Time passes, and Nora Tidemann is a scientist whom the Norwegian Prime Minister asks for help when “it” appears out of nowhere, after a company is opening a pass on Dovre mountain, due to complaints from the residents. Well, this Troll has woken up and is on his way to the capital, Oslo. Chaos ensues and Nora will appeal to her father, from whom she has distanced herself, who knows all about trolls.
But until it appears, or we don’t see it, 29 minutes pass. The director manages the film’s timing well, creating intrigue even though we all know the Troll will do his thing at some point.
While made of stones, well, the Troll may have some moments of goodness – saving a child from being crushed to death in an amusement park – but it can also swallow a human. Do you have a stomach? Of course it does, because it has a tail.
The eternal full moon, because they have actually seen it, but precisely in the movies when they are outdoors and at night, the satellite is always full and illuminates everything, it helps us to see everything. How they throw everything at the Troll and how the Troll throws everyone. Or almost everyone.
There’s also the politician in a tie and sweater, the soldier who still wants to fight the strange thing, and on the other side there’s someone waiting sitting in an office with giant monitors, watching live action, who’s the one who decide whether to attack or what to do against the Troll.
Ine Marie Wilmann, who is Nora, has already been in another Netflix production, bloodride (2020) and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, who is Private Kris, in the series Home for Christmasalso on Netflix.
Director Roar Uthaug has experience in action and disaster cinema. He directed Tomb Raider: The Adventures of Lara Croftwhen Alicia Vikander replaced Angelina Jolie, and also Wavein which the passage of a mountain on the Geirangerfjord created a tsunami.
So with this mountain thing he’s already used to it. And her path to Hollywood would be assured.
