“London, are you ready?” asks a presenter over the loudspeaker. On one hand, a block of fans are screaming yes. On the other, a line of journalists, photographers and cameramen prepare for action. All the lights are aimed downtown, on the red carpet or, for that matter, the blue carpet. Blue carpet, for the world premiere of Avatar: The Path of Water. On more than six giant screens the countdown begins 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Electronic music plays in the background. Many dance for excitement, others to endure the London chill.
The color change of the carpet, due to the appearance of the characters from Avatars, some blue humanoids living on the moon Pandora, already sounds like a cabal. And this James Cameron repeats the formula he used thirteen years ago, for the presentation of the first Avatarswhich became the highest-grossing film in history.
But now, more than a tribute to the protagonists of this universe, the 100 meters that Hollywood stars walk up to the entrance of the Edeon Luxe cinema, located in Leicester Square, in the heart of London, seem more like a river, a path of water
The parade of faces of cinema (literally) with Cameron in the lead starts before 6pm. The director of titanic Y Terminator arrives among the first and together with his wife Suzy Amis. She, in a blue suit, he with a tie of the same colour. They hug, smile for the cameras.
James stops to chat with one of the event’s presenters. Their answers are now heard over the loudspeaker and can be viewed on one of the giant screens. Suzy takes a few steps forward, but stops midway at the television picture of her husband. She listens to him talk about commitment and expectations and she gets emotional.
Stephen Lang, the bad Colonel Miles Quaritchel, who returns avatars 2 unconventionally, it’s another early adopter. He does so accompanied by his wife Kristina Watson. When they say his name, the fans applaud.
Sam Worthington arrives
Behind him, lightning points Sam Worthington, protagonist of the Disney film, and his partner Lara. A teenager in a blue suit yells “Saaaam” at him and cries, then tries “Jake”, his character name, and keeps crying. A girl with a face full of blue glitter hugs him and tries to calm him down.
Everything is stimulus, luminosity, movement. The screens with the trailer looping, the clothes full of rocks. White and blue lights. The flashes. The music, the screams. A fury controlled by the event staff which is divided between people with VIP and AAA (All Access Areas) necklaces.
The fan side is reactivated with the arrival of Kate Winslet, Rose’s beloved titanic who works with Cameron again in the sequel to Avatarsas Ronal, one of the leaders of the Metkayina clan, who lives in the seas of Pandora. Now blonde, he paces the blue carpet and hugs Cameron on one of the boxes. They talk together for another camera of the happiness they find by meeting again.
Zoe Saldaña, Neytiri in fiction, and Sigourney Weaver, who plays Kiri Avatar: The Path of Water, are among the most sought after by journalists. They arrive a few minutes later and enter the Edeon theater first.
The carpet is completed by the new generation of actors: young Bailey Bass, Jamie Flatters, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss and Jack Champion, who do not seem to believe what they are experiencing. “This is all a dream,” Bailey repeats, waving when told the show is starting. At seven o’clock, the talents disappear from that stream. The glow goes out and the lights go out.
