Ninety-two countries submitted films for consideration in the International Feature Films category for the 95th Academy Awards ceremony. And there will be, first, 15. Then yes, the five finalists who will be the candidates.

An “international feature film,” as defined by the Hollywood Academy, is a feature film (over 40 minutes) produced outside the United States with a predominantly (over 50%) dialogue track that is not in English.

Academy members from all branches (be they directors, performers, publishers, hairdressers) were invited to choose to participate in the preliminary round of voting. Sure: they have to meet a minimum viewing requirement to be able to vote in the category.

The voting rules are “changing,” which doesn’t literally mean “improve,” but rather to adjust.

an intuition

But which ones can there be, among the 15?

Some, like his Argentina, 1985, appear to have a guaranteed place on the shortlist. Others are to close, by Lukas Dhont (Belgium), on the friendship between two thirteen-year-old boys, Leo and Remi, which suddenly ends. It has already won the Grand Prix at Cannes 2022, had 4 nominations at the European Film Academy Awards, including film, won the National Board of Review (NBR) in the category and is nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film (as Argentina, 1985).

From Germany, No news at the frontby Edward Berger, about the experiences and anxieties of a young German soldier on the Western Front during World War I, is also nominated for a Golden Globe, won two European Film Awards and was ranked as one of the top 5 international films by the National Review board.

From Denmark, holy spider, by Ali Abbasi, about a journalist who travels to the Iranian holy city of Mashhad while investigating the serial murders of prostitutes by the so-called “spider killer”, who she says is clearing the streets of sinners. Another one who passed through Cannes and won an award (for Best Actress, for Zar Amir-Ebrahimi), and had 4 nominations at the European Film Awards.

France presented St. Omerby Alice Diop. Rama, a writer who attends the trial of Laurence Coly, who murdered her little daughter, at the Saint-Omer criminal court to use her story to write a modern adaptation of the ancient myth of Medea. She had her before her in Venice, like Argentina, 1985and there he won the Grand Jury Prize, received a nomination at the European Film Awards, attended London, also as Argentina, 1985and was in the top 5 foreigners by the National Board of Review.

Other films in Spanish that can pass this first cut or selection of 15 titles are Bardof the Mexican Alejandro González Iñárritu, and of the Spanish alcarrasby Carla Simón, which won the Golden Bear in Berlin for best film, earned two EFA nominations and 11 Goya nominations.

But there are acclaimed films that won’t be nominated in that category.

For example, the Indian RRRwhich competes with the Ricardo Darín-starring film at the Golden Globe, was not sent from his home country of India to compete for a place in the Oscar nominations (they sent Latest film reviewby Pan Nalin).

And one that swept away the European Film Awards, the most awarded The triangle of sadness, by the Danish Ruben Ostlund, does not represent his country at the Oscars (he speaks many languages), is not at the Golden Globe for foreign films, but is for best comedy and best supporting actress for Dolly De León. You won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, but as we’ve already said, you have no chance of competing in the same field as Argentina, 1985.

There are 15 left on Wednesday, but the real dispute will be for January 24th. There’s only room for 5, and who knows, in one of those Argentina has its eighth Oscar candidate, after Truce, Camilla, The official story (who won), Tango, The son of the bride, The secret in their eyes (who won) e wild tales.
