The cannes film festival demanded this Monday (December 19) for the “immediate release” of the well-known Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoostiprotagonist of an Oscar-winning film, arrested on Saturday in his country for having supported the protests of the last three months against the Islamic regime.
In a statement released on social networks, the festival reiterated its “firm condemnation” and “full support” for Alidoosti, who, according to Iranian media, was arrested on charges of inciting riots in her country.
“In solidarity with the peaceful struggle it supports for women’s freedom and rights, the Cannes Film Festival shows its full support for it”, noted the French competition.
The general delegate of the festival, Thierry Fremauxhe subsequently ratified this position and ensured that the intention of the festival is for the actress to know that Cannes is with her and, through the prestigious French event, “the entire international community”, as she explained in statements on public radio france-info.
Frémaux stressed that Alidoosti, being able to remain silent, has not ceased to commit himself to the claims of his country and that, since there “it’s so popular”became “dangerous to the regime”.
“She’s part of the people who stay in the country and try to fight where they are. It’s formidable and worrying for her,” said the festival’s general delegate.
According to information published in Iran, Alidoosti has published content deemed false and distorting by the Tehran authorities, as well as promoting riots and supporting anti-Iranian movements.
In the post that led to her imprisonment, the 38-year-old actress said: “Her name was Mohsen Shekari. Any international organization that is watching this bloodshed and failing to act is a disgrace to humanity.”
In reference to the repressive forces of Iran which, days ago, executed Shekari, a prisoner who had participated in the protests against the regime. The state agency Mizan specified that the death row inmate had confessed during the trial that he had received “payments” for having attacked an agent of the so-called “Moral Police”, and that for this he stabbed an Islamic militant.
As for the young actress, it seems that only she is considered a sort of “cultural earthquake” by the international press: the Iranian has become popular and has caused a sensation for publicly taking off the hijab. Young women in Iran started this revolution and the popular actress followed suit.
Tarane Alidoosti (Tehran, 1984) has won several awards throughout her career and was the star of the film The seller (the seller), directed in 2016 by his compatriot Asghar Farhadi and which in 2017 won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
Last July, the Cannes Film Festival had already called for the release of three Iranian filmmakers detained in their country: Mostafa Aleahmad, Mohammad Rasoulof and Jafar Panahi.
