The gestures of his characters, of Jake and Neytiri, protagonists of Avatar the water trail, start appearing during the chat. Something about the way Zoe Saldaña smiles has a lot of the ten-foot-tall blue Na’vi leader she plays. In Sam Worthington’s deep and sometimes empathetic gaze there is also a lot of the non-human Jake he embodies in this sequel.

London is for them the first stage of a promotional tour that will touch the blue carpets of Tokyo and Los Angeles. In the English cold, it arrives clarion.

Behind the lights and cameras, which transform this room of the Corinthia Hotel into a film set, there is a respectful silence. For the premiere of the new film directed by James Cameron (they call him “Jim”), a Spanish journalist has just interviewed them and behind this reporter two more arrive from the United States.

Zoe and Sam basically look at each other after every question and take turns answering them.

Zoe Saldana is bilingual. Although you were born in the United States, at the age of 9 you moved to the Dominican Republic and speak perfect Spanish. Something she will demonstrate later in this note. She is an actress and model. Famous for her participation in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014 and 2017)avengers (2018 and 2019)Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) and Star Trek (2009), among other hits. She is 44 years old and has three children.

Sam Worthington was born in England but raised in Australia. In addition to Jake Sully in Avatar, he is known for playing Perseus Wrath of the Titans (2010). She is 46 years old and also has three children.

The eye to the family

The second film of the now saga is focused on the family (in fact, The characters of Zoe and Sam become parents) and, according to what they say, this new reality touches them very closely.

“The way the Sullies (Jake and Neytiri) love their kids is something I connected with very easily,” Zoe says. “Even that feeling of dread: ‘Oh, my God! Something is going to happen to someone I love very much, or emotions like anger or rage,” she adds.

“The movie is about protecting your closest family or the one you choose, and taking care of what you love,” adds Sam, noting that, in the first AvatarsJake asks to open your eyes, in reference to waking up and fighting for something.

He notes that his character is “fighting for his family, for his planet, for this culture that he’s also opened his eyes to and fallen in love with.”

“These are messages we can identify with, our planet, our family,” says Sam, who when he raises his eyebrows and says “fighting for” (struggling to) become a bit like Jake.

In defense of the environment

-The environmental message appears…

Sam: Yes, that message is more important now than it was 10 or 13 years ago. Those of my generation are like they want to apologize and say “look, we don’t know where the world is going, but we know it’s in trouble”. I teach my children that they must find a way to help the planet or it will cease to exist.

Zoe: I think the theme will be in every take and it won’t be a sermon but it will be very impressive.

-It’s been 13 years since the first film, what was it like coming back after a long time?

Zoe: It was exciting, it seemed to me that that day would never come. Jim has always kept in touch with us. He’d send us emails or we’d meet him at dinner and he’d tell us what he thought we were doing.

But it wasn’t until 2013 that he said he started writing and, in 2015, he invited us into his studio and we could see huge pictures he had on his wall, he walked us through the idea, the general outlines of the saga. Avatars that was growing in his mind. And that’s when we discovered that it wasn’t just one sequel that he was projecting, but four other films. Of course, when you hear it, you think: Yes!

Saldaña makes a fist with his hand and lowers his bent arm with that “yes” which is actually a “yes”. There too Zoe looks like Neytiri partying, beating up bad guys. Sam smiles.

-What were the main challenges during the making of this film?

Sam: The movie is called The path of the water so I thought we’d get wet (laughs). Jim loves being underwater, so he decided to put what we did in the first one and bring that technology to a big aquarium.

This poses many challenges, many more problems. But that’s what we like about these films: they are pioneering, things are done that no one has done before. Anything underwater will be three times as difficult. So you only trust your technique and we trust each other.

What did the film leave you professionally and personally?

Zoe: Professionally, knowing I’ve been a part of something of this magnitude makes me feel truly special. Personally I’ve been able to work with people I really admire and respect and that doesn’t always happen.

Sam nods in agreement. To answer about what it was like working with James Cameron, they don’t take turns and answer “awesome” at the same time. “He’s a good boy,” completes Zoe.

How do you expect the audience to receive? the path of the water?

Sam: This movie is different from the others. Jim worked until the last day, he also filmed this year. From 2013 to today it has simply been a job done with love…

Zoe: I hope soMay it move people the same way it moved me. The first film had a special impact years ago, I can only expect the same level of reception, not because we want to be successful and make a lot of money, but because a lot of these issues run deep. I felt everything: I felt happy, euphoric, even sad.

Zoe Saldaña’s union with Argentina

Not only does the Spanish unite Zoe Saldaña with Argentina, but also his fanaticism for his partner, then it went viral on several occasions. She said that her makeup artist Vera is from Buenos Aires and the habit of her has spread in her. Therefore, the end of the note includes a gift.

-We know, Zoe, that you like to drink mate, so we brought yerba from Argentina

(Sam laughs and Saldana looks surprised.)

Zoe: What kind of grass?

The yellow package reaches her hands and she begins to examine it. What follows is half in English and half in Spanish. “Gluten-free, I love it.”

-And have you tried other things from Argentina, like wine?

Zoe: This is what I drank when I was younger, yes, Malbec (Sam laughs). But now I prefer yerba mate. I always like to smell the weed.

As he says this, he begins to open the package. She smells it and hands it to Sam to do the same. The protagonist of Avatars and the Hollywood star respects the slogan. The chat continues and Zoe tells her that she has never visited Argentina, but that she “would be a nice project” and that she would like to “travel soon”. Sam knows: “I went a long time ago.” And did you like it? “Absolutely, people were very friendly.”

Saldaña interrupts him with “thank you very much, Argentina, I can’t wait for you to see it Avatars, a kiss”, in Spanish and looking at the camera. Filming stops, but the actress maintains her enthusiasm, throws another farewell “thank you” and asks for her weed to be saved before the next interview begins.
