The historic call – ended abruptly – to receive the world champions in Qatar 2022 has left a large number of damages as a result, in addition to graffiti, broken traffic lights, grounded light poles, garbage and damage to Metrobus train stations.

One of the most affected areas was the center of Buenos Aires, mainly in the Obelisk area, where large numbers of people gathered. Until then it was this Wednesday Santiago Maratea to collaborate in the cleaning.

“I’ve read a lot of people saying ‘now go clean the obelisk’. And that didn’t sound like a bad idea. So I took 20 bags and I’m going to collect the trash at the Obelisk”said the influencer on his Instagram account, where he accumulates more than 3.5 million followers.

“I’m fascinated by the post festival debate but before I go clean the Obelisk”added Maratea, referring to the criticisms received by the national holiday decreed by Alberto Fernández, the political detainees and the security problems that surrounded the massive summons.

And then he asked his followers to imitate his actions: “Whoever wants to do it, I’ll do it. Or you leave work with a bag, you pick up a few things and throw them away. How to put some order”.

Then, again in his Instagram stories, he showed himself collecting waste, accompanied by a group of people who joined his crusade. “Let’s go,” he said, as he collected a large number of empty plastic bottles. And then the influencer detailed: “In case someone comes to clean up, look in the plants, there’s a lot of garbage.”

“My friend’s smell,” she said later, as she put together a piece of cardboard. And he also thanked a person who brought him gloves so he could do his homework better.

And finally he showed how he carried the bags he collected to the garbage collectors. “The team was put together. They gave us the bags because we ran out,” she said, happy with her task. “The truth is, it’s clean enough, there’s rubbish but it’s good enough”, Maratea stood out, proudly showing the “before and after” of a territory that it helped to clean up.

Destroyed in the Obelisk

Between Sunday and Tuesday the Obelisk suffered all kinds of attacks. The bars were breached, so the Buenos Aires government decided to remove them between Sunday and Monday. On game day, at night, a group of people broke through the front door and climbed to the top, 67 meters off the floor, to remove the body through the upper windows.

The solution of the Municipality’s Ministry of Public Space was to weld the door, “we have armored it”, the sources say. But early Tuesday they smashed it with a sledgehammer. Once the people who had entered had managed to get out, the decision was made to cut the iron staircase leading to the top.

Despite everything, on Tuesday night fell, another person was seen hanging himself from one of the windows. When the firefighters tried to get in to lower it, there have been incidents with the police.
