Neither the gingerbread cookies, nor the families who assemble the tree, or go in and out of the shops, or put the turkey in the oven. That’s not what you see in this thematic series that escapes the clichés of the Christmas subgenre. In christmas storm Everything happens and without the characters having to leave (with a few exceptions) an airport.
An air terminal is usually a place of transit. Well, in this charming Norwegian drama that Netflix just released, no. People are stuck at Oslo airport due to bad weather conditions, and so on one night “quarantine” lives with some touch of anguish, bewilderment and uncertainty, but without the burden of suffocating isolation.
The production of six episodes that run about 35 minutes wear out easilynot because it is strictly light, but because of the agility of the story and the simplicity of the formula. Simplicity that, for this type of story, is appreciated: The plot reveals the emotional fluctuations of those trapped in the same place a few hours before Christmas Eve.
And, in that provisional older brotherthe lights and shadows of the characters appear, with some festive and allegorical lights in the background, e a lot of snow “outside”, according to the jargon of the Dutch reality show.
The first two episodes serve as an introduction to a large gallery of characters: the pianist collapsed from criticism (Dennis Storhoi), the pop star who says she hates fame (Ida Elise Broch), the nun who asks for signs from beyond (and receives them), the one who believes his own lie to mask the painthe arrogant lawyer… It could take us a long time to present them.
The best thing about the series is the ability to drop levels on each and almost randomlyup to show, in the last episode, his other face.
Something like that from one day to the next -literally- each of them finds in that impediment (18 minutes into the episode, the first flight is cancelledbound for Copenhagen, and, like a domino effect, the one in London, the one in Rome, the one in Malaga, the one in New York are suspended) a chance to heal, to remedy or vindicate or mend, or encourage.
A Santa surprised by the demands of today’s children dates the plot. And the background music definitely gives the Christmas touch to this fiction that offers in the crossing of characters another of its highest points.
But, when it comes to digging deep, it doesn’t seem to go down enough. And, in that walk on the surface, the script sometimes becomes predictable and it’s easy to guess that everyone will have their reward. Or his revenge. As if the intention were to demonstrate that, from situations like these, we can all come out better. We see that, at least in fiction, it is possible.
