Every December, the classic 1988 action movie Die Hard (Die Hard ) is the subject of numerous debates and memes about its status (or lack thereof) as a Christmas movie. This year, however, the Ukrainian government is celebrating the film’s story for a very different reason.
Through its networks, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine released an edited trailer for the film by Bruce Willis, comparing the film’s plot to the Russian army’s invasion of the country this year.
With the Singing of the bells by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych and the interpretation of Frank Sinatra let it Snowvideo cuts movie scenes, starring Bruce Willis as New York detective John McClane as he tries to rescue the hostages of a German terrorist takeover directed by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), with text describing the plot.
an ironic text
“This Christmas, Ukraine celebrates the festive story of how an arrogant terrorist’s special military operation was thwarted by a poor underdog,” reads the video’s opening text.
“It was the perfect plan, leaving nothing to chance, until everything went wrong. The war you never wanted is one you can’t afford to lose. This Christmas, the ancient story of David and Goliath comes close to us.
The video also features images of modern Ukraine, including a video from a Christmas tree lit in the colors of the Ukrainian flag and an explosion that occurred during military efforts.
Some of the images highlight scenes from the film to reference the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, including a dead terrorist’s shirt being altered to read “Now I have a machine gun Ho-Ho-Ho” to replace “machine gun” with “HIMARS.” , referring to the High Mobility Artillery Missile System used in the war effort.
Another edit juxtaposes Rickman’s quote from the film “I read about them in the magazine Time“, with the cover of the edition of person of the year by Volodymyr Zelensky.
In the tweet caption that accompanied the video, Ukraine’s Defense account wrote: “A loser who wins against the bad guys. This is the kind of story that everyone likes. Dedicated to all the diehards on the front lines. Ukraine will win!” The tweet ended with “Yippe Ki-Yay…!”which references Willis’ most famous line in the film.
