The Italian fiction that Netflix released two months ago, but so far it has not achieved the deserved visibilitypoint the camera at that delicate terrain to tackle what is mental health like?.
Based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Mencarelli (Everything asks for Salvationpublished in 2020), consists of seven episodes, titled as every day of the week. And the story begins on Sunday, when Daniele (Frederick Caesar) wakes up in hospital conditions. He doesn’t know how or why he got there..
There are no memories, only unknown faces, bewildered looks, astonished silences, fear, despair and resignation. A nurse enters the scene who tries to locate him in time and space and, subsequently, the script, the doctors and his own psychic conditions will do their duty with the intention of healing their own. Or, at least, repair what belongs to others.
Because no one is there without having generated a domino effect of crisis around them. Neither in the room with the six men nor in the one with the women, in which Nina, a character who will gain strength towards the end of the story.
The best thing about this drama series is trying to tell what a week of hospitalization is like for a group of patients with different psychiatric pathologies. Yup, as the pages of the almanac turn, there are progress and setbacks.
In that coming and going the six housemates are building different bondsfrom tiles of distrust and rejection as a starting point, to empathy, affection, pity or compassion, but having already known how to arrive, in seven days, in the other’s place.
everyone wants to save themselves It doesn’t want to be an essay on depression, bipolarity or other pathologies, but rather an account of life from the perspective of a bed where you don’t know how you got there and, little by little, he is encouraged to let himself be helped in order to be able to leave.
Daniele takes the reins of this story which shows him vulnerable, sensitive, violent, with a past that, from isolation, dares. And check. And draw. And he writes. And think. And he cries. Yup, thanks to the great work of Federico Cesari (starred in Skam Italia)knows how to move.
Like the week itself, the series moves fastIt is agile, even if it has strong moments that invite reflection. For getting more juice out of the face to face between the psychiatrist and Daniele, in the intimacy of pain and impotence, the series could have become very good.
But that doesn’t make it forgettable, far from it. everyone wants to save themselves It is one of those cases of series that get lost in the boiling of catalogues streambut which deserve a look to find, as the title asks, their own salvation.
