Written and produced by the 72-year-old musician, who in addition to being a successful soloist was a lead singer of Genesis before Phil Collins, the song was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire and The Beehive in London.

“The first song builds on an idea I’ve been working on to start creating an infinitely expandable accessible world of data: the Panapticom,” says Peter Gabriel. We’re starting to connect a group of like-minded people who could bring this to life, to allow the world to see better and better understand what’s really going on.”

Who accompanied him

In terms of music, Gabriel has surrounded himself to record panopticom of musicians with whom he has been collaborating, some for some time, such as the bassist and innovative American musician Tony Levin (76), guitarist David Rhodes (66) and French drummer, percussionist and composer Manu Katchè (64) and with the fantastic keyboard and electronic contribution of Brian Eno 74). A real supergroup.

The backing vocals are the Irish singer and flautist Rioghnach Connolly, member of the duo The Breath.

The lyrics of the composition are partly inspired by the remarkable work of three groups: Forensic Architecture, Bellingcat and the pioneering human rights organization WITNESS, which Gabriel co-founded.

An unusual approach

The full moon release of this single retains the charm of Gabriel’s purest style; the fire of I It will be something different from the usual norm: the output of each composition will take the phases of the moon as the date. The moon will be the guide in the launch plan of the new album. With each full moon, a new song will be revealed.

“Part of what I’m writing about right now is the idea that we seem incredibly capable of destroying the planet that gave us birth, and that unless we find ways to reconnect with nature and the natural world, we will lose a lot . An easy way to think about where we fit into all of this is to look at the sky… and the moon has always led me to do that,” said the artist.

Each new composition, which will be released month by month (each full moon), will have specific artwork. “We reviewed the work of many hundreds of artists and chose for the cover of panopticom the titled work Red Gravityby David Spriggs,” said Gabriel.

“It was the subject of surveillance that connected me to David Spriggs’ work, because he had done a piece related to that. David does these amazing things by layering transparency to get these bizarre creations of real intensity.”

“Part of what he does is imagine what art will be like in a few years and then try to create accordingly and I think about what he has done very successfully in this particular piece,” added the composer who has 27 albums, including, SW (1986) and we (1992).

Peter Gabriel will start presenting I in Europe, on May 18, in Krakow, Poland; the tour continues in Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, again in Germany and France, and in mid-June in the United Kingdom. The second part of 2023 will be dedicated to his concerts in the United States.
