Gina Lollobrigida: Open the burning chapel to bid a final farewell

The admirers of Gina Lollobrigidawho died this Monday at the age of 95, has begun to arrive at her funeral chapel, installed in the town hall of Rome, to greet the Italian actress and last diva of a generation of Italian cinema.

The funeral chapel was opened at 10:00 (9:00 GMT) and the coffin was received by the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, who expressed his condolences to his son Andrew Milcothe nephew Dimitri, also in the presence of her ex-husband, the Spaniard Francesco Javier Rigau and his collaborator for years Tiziana Rocca, according to what was reported by the Italian media.

In the large hall of the Promoteca of the capital’s town hall, used as a funeral chapel for the greatest Italian personalities, the photographs of the deceased actress and of the more than 60 films interpreted by “La Bersagliera”, as her name was called, have been placed in a iconic role bread, love and fantasy.

A cushion of red roses was placed on the coffin, in front of which many Roman citizens passed who admired the actress born in Subiaco, a town on the outskirts of Rome.

Among the crowns, in addition to those of the family, those of the Municipality of Rome, of Cinecitta’, of the Anica production company, of the Municipality of Subiaco, of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, of the Luce Archive and of the Audiovisual Producers Association.

The burning chapel will remain open until 7pm today (6pm GMT) and tomorrow, Thursday, in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Montesanto in Rome, known as the Church of the Artists.

A whole diva

Lollobrigida is considered one of the great actresses of Italian cinema, since her debut in 1946 in clear eagleby Riccardo Freda, to his work with some of the most famous directors, such as Pietro Germi, Mario Monicelli, Vittorio De Sica or Mario Soldati.

The funeral

The funeral will begin tomorrow at 12:30 local time (11:30 GMT) in that baroque church in the Roman Plaza del Pueblo where mass has been celebrated every Sunday since 1941 in honor of the artists.

“A true star of Italian and international cinema leaves us. With his films and his interpretations he entered the history of the country and its collective imagination by right. Rome, the city he loved, will be able to remember it as it deserves”, said the mayor, Roberto Gualtieri.
