The promotional synopsis of Kaleidoscope” (Netflix) leaves a feeling of Already seen. It refers to dozens of other productions we’ve seen with the same theme: “A master thief and his gang attempt an epic heist to steal $7 billion. But treachery, greed and other threats threaten his plan.”.
Despite the classic announcement, the surprises start from the first episode, a kind of trailer that lasts only 50 seconds. there it rises, Cortazarian modethat each installment can be viewed in the order chosen by the viewer.
Each tells a piece of the puzzle of a 25-year robbery in the life of its protagonists. And each of these snippets answers some of the following questions: How was it planned? Who was the traitor? Who came out victorious?
Big heist series abound on streaming platformswith The robbery of money as one of its great phenomena. The big question is how to tell that story and what are the things at stake besides moneywhich in this case is quite juicy.
The team plans to steal the SLS; it is the most secure private vault in New York and probably the world. inside there is seven billion bearer bondswhich belong to three billionaires.
The series, which identify each episode with a colourIt doesn’t work for the millions at stake, or the tension of the heist, or finding the answers to the questions of who will betray whom.
Kaleidoscope it is sometimes, magnetic for at least two reasons: a luxury cast led by an exceptional Giancarlo Esposito (Gustavo “Gus” Fring enters breaking Bad Y Better call Saul) who plays the leader of the band e a story that goes beyond the game of fragmenting its episodes.
In the choral construction of the series, the creator Eric García track in the deepest nature of some of his characters. Just as Breaking Bad is an indictment of imposture, manipulation and how evil humans can be – far beyond the meth business -, here the question is what your characters are after with the robbery.
“It has never been about the money. You must have been rich. I do not”Ray Vernon (Esposito) calmly and accurately narrates one of his henchmen in one episode. That sentence – uttered by an actor of great charisma – sums up part of the spirit of the series.
in the episodes hearts beat for other reasons and not just for money. There is, just to mention a few cases, a father who is willing to heal the wounds he has caused in the past. High-profile lawyer and gun enthusiast with the scars left by the Argentine dictatorship. And another man as primitive as blindly in love, who knows how to use only force.
Here it is, maybe the biggest attraction of a series that, however, never fails to honor the tradition of the genre: There are heists, betrayals and a bunker to plan the big heist. But, like the mind of the group, we are all looking for something else. It’s never just about the money.
