The eclectic list of 14 inductees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2023 ranges from Kate Bushwho has been nominated three times before but has a particularly good chance of getting in now, a Willy Nelsonwhich could follow country music icon Dolly Parton.

The full list of nominees is as follows:

For all tastes?
A slight majority of the 14 inductees, eight in all, are on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot for the first time: Missy Elliott, Warren Zevon, Willie Nelson, White Stripes, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael and Joy Division/New Order.
This means, of course, that the remaining six return having been nominated but not voted on first.
Kate Bush she didn’t make the final cut when she was previously nominated in 2018, 2021 and 2022, but it looks like she has the wind in her favor now, with her old Running up that hill strangely become one of the biggest hits in the world, last year, thanks to sync Stranger things.
Rage against the machine is another act that appeared on the ballot last year and is appearing for the fourth time; the band was also nominated in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
The spinners?
soul band The spinners He was there three times before as well, but it’s been seven years for them since their last nomination. The ensemble’s previous nominations came in 2012, 2015 and 2016.
Soundgarden, Iron Maiden and A Tribe Called Quest they are listed for the second time this year after being nominated once in the recent past, in 2020, 2021 and 2022 respectively.
Passing the milestone of 25 years since their first commercial recordings, elliott became eligible when his album Supa Dupa Fly (launched July 1997) celebrated a quarter of a century last year.
With you, the White Stripes
The White Stripes didn’t release a full album until 1999, but they’re apparently eligible due to their debut single, Let’s shake handsreleased in March 1998.
At times, the Hall of Rock seemed poised to broadcast 1970s rock bands, as did the nominating committee for 1950s and 1960s possibilities, but several groups that were born or rose to fame in that decade they have come to this generation.
One is the Spinners, the R&B vocal group whose ’70s hits include It could be that I’m falling in love, Working to get back to you, I’ll be around AND The elastic man.
Stand up, Warren Zevon
Another is Warren Zevonwhich has long been mentioned as a major glaring omission for not earning a nomination before now.
Though he didn’t have many big chart hits beyond that Werewolves of Londonhis bold and distinctive storytelling He has influenced thousands of songwriters.
Willie Nelson, who will soon turn 90he has been eligible since Rock Hall’s first class in 1983.
The nominating committee didn’t always seem sure whether or not to embrace iconic country artists, the way it has genres like soul, R&B, pop, and disco; some have pointed out that country music has its own hall of fame, as if that bars artists in the genre from double dipping.
But with Parton’s vote in 2022 (after initially questioning its inclusion), the impasse may have been broken, from Nelson’s consideration now and perhaps from other legends like Merle Haggard and Loretta Lynn in the future.
The Joy Division/New Order nomination marks one of the few times that a seminal band and their spin-off group have been merged into one project.
This will seem like a reasonable choice to many, given that New Order consists mostly of the same lineup as Joy Division save for the absence of Ian Curtis, whose death by suicide in 1980 prompted the survivors to continue under a different brand.
This had previously happened with the Rascals/Young Rascals and the Faces/Small Faces as individual entries, although in those cases the simultaneously joining spin-off bands had names derived from the original act.
Crow could be a popular choice, both for being a pioneering rocker (although her recording career didn’t start until the early ’90s, things were so dire before then that she’s considered a pioneer) and for her strongly collaborative nature years.
Still, many musicians could be among the 1,000+ voting members, likely a substantial number of whom have recorded duets with Crow or shared the stage with her over the past 30 years.
George Michael He may be the most polarizing candidate among that segment of the public who believe pure pop artists shouldn’t be included in a room with rock in the name, but that hasn’t stopped musicians and industry professionals from picking pop artists as winners. in recent years, like Lionel Richie’s induction last fall.
If Elliott makes it to this class, he’ll join a very select group of hip-hop artists in the Hall of Fame that includes last year’s inductee, Eminem, plus Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, NWA, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Biggie Smalls, Tupac Shakur AND Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
While several nominated artists were also nominated last year, there are several 2022 nominees who are taking a break from the ballot this year: Devo, Dionne Warwick, Beck, New York Dolls, Fela Kuti and MC5.
The Hall of Fame has noted that actual inductees will drop off this list will be announced in May. It has not been revealed in which city the ceremony will take place this year, between the usual changes between Cleveland and New York with a few trips to Los Angeles, although it is expected let the show keep its regular October spot on the calendar for a live concert.
