For Kim Petras2022 has been a big year – the 30-year-old German singer-songwriter has received it first Grammy nominationmade her acting debut on the HBO series The Spectrals and released a single with acclaimed pop producer Max Martin.
Inspired by the irreverent attitude of their Grammy-nominated duet, wickedthat she is Sam Smith will present at the awards ceremony this Sunday, Petras has decided to delve into the waters of religious language and its themes by collaborating with Martin to compose If Jesus was a rock star.
religion as mythology
Petras, who is transgender, understands that her involvement with religion is subversive and a way to process trauma. The artist, who became known to be one of the youngest people in the world to undergo sex reassignment surgery assigned at birth, began recording music at age 19 and released his first EP, A piece of tapestill a teenager in 2011.
Regarding her new theme featuring the figure of Jesus Christ, she says: “I’ve never had the opportunity to learn about spirituality or to be accepted by God. It’s like mythology to me. For me, it’s like a fairy tale or any other story,” she said during a recent interview with the Associated Press.
And he adds: “From an early age it was like ‘I’m going to hell’. That was my experience growing up,” she said. “If I had the chance to be a part of the religion, maybe I would. I live”.
rise to fame
Though he’s been making music for over a decade, Petras’ rise to fame didn’t happen overnight. And while she’s grateful for her success, she acknowledges that this level of stardom makes her and her music more vulnerable to criticism.
“Now it is more serious. It’s more like now people are really watching, and there’s really a lot of eyes out there that maybe they’re not my fans, maybe they’re not that nice to me,” she said. “But I feel that since I’ve built firmly on the my personality, I can handle it.”
Before his career took off, Petras released music as an independent artist under his own label. And he credits artists like Robyn and Charli XCX, who have also independently released music, for inspiring the creation of BunHead Records, whose name is a nod to Sailor Moon’s bow hairdo.
Attitude when you turn 30
In addition to achieving several career milestones in 2022, Petras also hit a decade-long breakthrough when he turned 30 this past August. But the pop star said her philosophy on her age is very much in line with that of legendary musician Prince, who famously missed her birthday.
“Age doesn’t matter to me. She will never stop going to discos or loving and frequenting gay clubs. That’s who they are,” she said.
Keeping its essence, its new single brrr, which will be part of their first album, has very sensual lyrics and many touches of electronic music. But Petras hopes to do more with his music than provide a catchy beat to get people dancing on the floor.
“It’s a scary time for kids and trans people and I think there’s a lot of things they really need to improve,” she said. “I’m scared for the trans community and I hope I can be the right person to make them forget about these issues and have some fun for a while.”
