The multiple Oscar winner La La Land (2016) has been adapted for the stage and will become a Broadway musical, entertainment company Lionsgate and one of its producers, Marc Platt, announced Tuesday.
“I am delighted to meet Lionsgate and the incredible team behind it La La Land to adapt the film for the Broadway stage, the next exciting installment in its evolution,” Platt said in a press release.
The musical already has prestigious names: directed by Bartlett Sher (Kill a Mockingbird, The Fiddler on the Roof; Tony Award winner), book by Ayad Akhtar (Pulitzer Prize winner) and Matthew Decker, music composed by Justin Hurwitz (who won the Academy Award for film score) and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (formerly won the Oscar and the Tony).
The film, directed by Damien Chazelle (Babylon), played by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the roles of a jazz musician and an aspiring actress who pursues her dreams in Los Angeles, becoming a cultural phenomenon.

In one of the most famous moments in Oscar history, the film was mistakenly announced as Best Picture before the award was given to the one that actually won. Moonlight (Moonlight).
In addition to awards attention – at the Golden Globes it won the 7 categories for which it was nominated (Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, Director, Actor and Actress in a Comedy or Musical, Screenplay, Score and Original Song, making it the film most awarded in the history of the Globe Awards, surpassing Trapped with no way outwhich managed to win 6 awards in 1975-, La La Land became an international box office winner, grossing $151 million in North American theaters and $472 million worldwide.
Winner of six Hollywood Academy Awards, and remembered for songs like City of stars, another sunny day AND Audition (fools who dream)the year after its premiere it was adapted to a concert format which toured internationally for six years.
While the musical’s cast is not yet known, the Broadway adaptation of La La Land seems like a safe bet for Lionsgate given the film’s impact on Hollywood and the credentials of the crew that brings it to the stage.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic forced New York City’s theater district to close for months, the industry has struggled to get its head back on its feet and even some of the longest-running or award-winning productions are having trouble staying on the bill, even as others like The Lion King OR Chicago they achieved the feat of staying on stage for more than two decades.
