Five years ago, at the age of 17, Thomas Nicolás Tobar took his savings, asked his parents for help and came from Santiago del Estero to Buenos Aires be a trap singer. He already had his stage nickname, “precipitant”and all the desire to devote himself to music and be successful.
Today, he is one of the biggest names in the local urban music scene. He has had many hits and collaborated with figures such as María Becerra, Duki, Oriana, Luck Ra, Lit Killah, Tiago PZK and FMK. And just a week ago you were at the Viña del Mar Festival as a guest of Emilia Mernes.
In addition to filling the Gran Rex and the Luna Park, he practiced with excellent results the intersectionto the join artists of other styles such as Alejandro Lerner, Dread Mar-I, Iván Noble and La K’onga. A perfect formula for huge success
His name also entered paparazzi and gossip show territory when he arrived as engaged to La China Suárez. Unusually, he spent nearly a year with María Becerra first and it didn’t generate the same media hoopla.
Now, facing a major recital at the Movistar Arena stadium, the Friday 24 Marchhe plans to give his year’s business a big boost, which started with summer tours and the single I want to believe (with Luck Ra and La T y la M), and will continue with the release of an EP, then his first album and finally an international tour.
“I wanted to be where I am”
Shortly after noon on Monday, after a frantic tour that started at the Salamanca Festival (La Banda, Santiago del Estero) and the next day until the Piedra Laja National Festival (Los Menucos, Río Negro), Tommy he sits down on a comfortable sofa in his production house and chats askance at the lunch that is still waiting for him.
At one point he remains thoughtful, when he hears the popular saying “Don’t ask for a dream because it can come true”, and reflects:
“When you have a dream – he says – maybe you don’t know what the process is or what can happen, but you dream it because you want it and you want it. I wanted to be where I am. I wanted to be a singer and never imagined all the things I went through in between.”
-What was your first dream, to come to Buenos Aires?
-Yes. My first dream was to come to Buenos Aires. It happened to me, I came, I didn’t have fun and I had to sleep in a basement. That’s why I say it’s not just the dream where you imagine everything is perfect, but that there are a thousand things that happen in between until it’s realized.
-Many music scenes have mythical places, such as the bar where rockers used to go in the 60s or Antezana 247, the house where Duki, YSY A and Neo Pistea lived. How was the house where you lived with Lit Killah and Tiago PZK?
-It was from 2021 to January 2022. It was a giant house in Nuñez, a villa with a pool and everything, where we set up the studio and the four of us were: Tiago, FMK, Lit and me. That’s where the best songs on the scene come from, like next to me, Between us, Turn on the camera, I know you and the full album FMK, Lit’s and Tiago’s. There have been many issues that have marked history and have arisen from there.
-How was the coexistence? Were they in a “permanent party state”?
-Living together, like everything new, was a bit complicated at first until we got used to it, because no one had ever lived with friends before. But in the end we understood each other perfectly and got along very well. Of course there were parties from time to time and we had a lot of fun. There are a thousand anecdotes left, like my anger when someone ate my sweet Serenito. (laughs) It was a very nice time that we all had together, and I think people from the outside saw that, which was nice. And we were already playing a lot.
-Who else do you have a lot of complicity and friendship in the scene?
-With that little group, with the three of them, because we trained as artists and our career took shape in that period we lived together. We have learned a lot from each other and we trust each other a lot.
Reportage and paparazzi
-Some artists, like Wos and Bizarrap, give few interviews, while for example L-Gante gives many. How are you doing with relationships?
-Everyone has their reasons for giving or not giving interviews. I particularly like to talk and tell what I’m doing and where I am in my career. I also think it helps a lot to promote, that they find out I have a show or a new song, whatever. It’s a way to be present, but I don’t like to give too much either. Which are the ones I have to give since people come to him.
-And hasn’t it been difficult for you to give notes in these months, where maybe they didn’t ask you about music and just wanted to know about your private life?
-Yes, but thank God I took a break since we confirmed the relationship with my girlfriend and everything became more public. Since everything is clearer, they don’t bother us so much anymore. The problem was when no one knew if we were together or not. It is there that the largest kilombo was set up. Since now they don’t have to ask us, everything is perfect.
What would you not do again?
-And…farting, going to a party, having your picture taken, and everyone realizes what you’re up to. That’s what we did!
-What would be the song that best reflects your personal phase, “Fondo de pantalla”, which says “I fell in love with you at first sight, yes”?
-Yes just like this. I’m in a very good moment, I have a lot of fun and I feed a lot on her and her on me, learning a lot. Both very happy. She takes me to exhibitions and I take her to work.
“I like to vary, otherwise I get bored”
One of the characteristics of urban music is the union of artists in duos or trios, where sometimes they come from similar styles but in other cases they are very different.
According to Rusherking, “There’s a little bit of everything. When you’re making songs, you always think of someone who can get involved. Collaboration offers also come from elsewhere, whether it’s from the record company or Instagram messages. But they come from everyone types and from all sides I look for mine, I always try to talk to the artist and coordinate with each other, I talk to other artists and we always reach an agreement.
-You seem to like everything, because you went on a trip with Lerner and La K’onga. Do you like variety so as not to pigeonhole yourself?
-I like to vary, because otherwise I get bored. I always like to do different things, because monotony and routine make me shit. I prefer to explore different universes and I always stay that way. In fact I did the ballad with Lerner, a reggae with Dread Mar-I, before a song with Iván Noble and a ballad with Reik. Now a cumbia and recently a RKT.
-Last thing was the theme with Luck Ra and T and La M. How did they connect?
-We registered that theme one month before launching it. It came out of nowhere! Luck was on the coast and he said he had a song with La T y La M, that he wanted to join me. You know that I say yes to every project you propose, once. Also, the song was bomb, so I went to the studio, liked what I made, and sent it to him. Then we went to Pinamar, where I was on vacation with my girlfriend, and coordinated and video recorded. It went very well. It was all very fast.
-Everything comes out so fast, a month between the first call for the release of the song and the video? Or save the topics for later?
-It depends on one and the strategy of each release. In general, I do it quickly in the studio, by touch, and we present it to the platforms. Then we make the video clip. The process is not very long; maximum two months.
-Do you always think about the songs or do you have the album in sight?
-Yes. In fact, I want to release the album this year, maybe in two months. I’m thinking about the LP and I’m not always single. We already have almost the whole idea formed and almost all the songs, but first I will release an EP with three songs, with a producer called Sech, which is fantastic. We’re out with that now. .
I don’t like to spoil collaborations, but there will be more on the album, and of course I will release more later. But it’s also a time where I want to really focus on myself and my solo songs and headbutt that.
Towards the Movistar Arena
During the 2022 review, he says “everything happened.” In total he has done about 50 dates all over Argentina. “The truth is that we ended up very tired, tired but happy,” he admits, but immediately says that in 2023 he wants to do even more, including an international tour.
-Which show have you seen that you liked the staging and scenery?
-The Vélez de Duki were great. I saw Rosalía’s when she came to Movistar, which was very simple but very well done, very programmed and scripted. In Madrid I saw the Arjona show, which breaks it, with a great scenography. I haven’t seen Dillom live, but I would like to because I know he breaks it. Every time I go to an exhibition I pay attention to all these things, to see what can be added to one.
-Do you think the Movistar recital is very different from the summer shows?
-It will be very different from weekend shows, which are generally festivals where you can’t show one hundred percent of your entire team. Time itself is less, so in a show like Movistar we tend to give everything.
It will be awful; We are proposing something very beautiful from an aesthetic point of view, all the artists will come and sing the songs with me, and there are moments designed for each part of the show. It’s going to be great, really. I know they are one hundred percent my people, the people who follow me and support me and know all the songs and all the lyrics. It will be a very nice experience for me. I think it will be my personal best show.
