Oscars 2023: who votes for best film and best international film

Today, Tuesday, is the deadline to vote on the Oscar winners. And on Sunday the 12th we will know if Argentina, 1985by Santiago Mitre, starring Ricardo Darín and Peter Lanzani, is the winner in the Best International Film category.

But how is the voting process? How do I get there Argentina, 1985 be the eighth Argentinian film to reach the nomination?

Because to get to the nominations the system is not the same as in other areas, such as choosing the candidates for the Hollywood Academy Award for best film, leading actor or director.

For Best Picture nominations, the slightly more than 9,500 members of the Academy who are allowed to vote, have no restrictions, nor do they have to prove that they have seen the films. They must vote in an order of preference. If they consider it the spirits of the island is the best, they put it first, and so on, in descending order.

The members of the Academy who belong to the branch of performers, have chosen the candidates in the four categories that concern them (best actress and leading actor, and best actress and supporting actor), as well as the musicians choose the candidates for the best original music and original song, publishers, for the best edition and so on.

Each country is invited to submit what it considers its best film to the Academy. Only one film per country is accepted. The designation of the official presentation must be made by an organization, a jury or a committee composed of people from the film industry.

For example, the UK’s bid is submitted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, while Brazil’s is submitted by a committee under its Ministry of Culture. Argentina, 1985 was chosen by our country’s Film Academy.

In the case of the Best International Film category, there was a first round attended by members of the Hollywood Academy who expressly signed up to vote. The Academy sent them 8 films each (there were 92 in total), and also ranked them in order of preference. And the 15 titles that received the best votes passed that cut and made up the shortlist, the first selection which was announced on Wednesday December 21, 2022. And it was already listed there. Argentina, 1985.

Then the vote was opened which decided which are the 5 candidates. There, voters had to see, yes or yes, the 15 films.

And from March 2 until today, Tuesday 7, members of the Academy can vote in this category, as if it were the best film or actor, because voting is already open to everyone.

The country that has won the Oscar several times in the category that before 2020 was defined as best film spoken in a foreign language is Italy, with 14 awards won (including three Special Awards) and 29 nominations, while France is the country with multiple nominations (37 and 12 awards, including three Special Awards).

Argentina, not counting Argentina, 1985has so far had 7 nominations and has won it twice: The official storyby Luis Puenzo, in 1986, and The secret in their eyesby Juan José Campanella, in 2010. The candidates: Truceby Sergio Renán (in 1975), Camillaby María Luisa Bemberg (in 1985), Tangoby Carlos Saura (1999), The son of the bridefrom Campanella, (2002) and wild tales (2015), by Damian Szifron.
