-I have a perspective problem, because the people I have a relationship with like the film, they don’t tell me they will vote for another one…

-“All Quiet Ahead” seems to be the favourite, it swept the BAFTAs in Great Britain, but on this side of the Atlantic it won very little. AS…

-Just as there is no direct correlation between the European awards and the Oscar, and a relative correlation between those that occur in the United States and the Oscar, if you think about it, the BAFTA list has no Latinos. In Europe they tend to be endocentric. They share some voters with the Oscar, yes, and the Golden Globe, none. The Oscar was born from the vote of the industry.

With awards of different specialties, such as the actors, who represent 36% of the Academy’s voting members, what comes out at SAG (the Screen Actors Guild) sometimes carries over to the Oscars, sometimes it doesn’t. I’m very judgmental about guessing based on what a film has won before, but yes, the awards amplify the film and give it a higher profile.

-What did this awards season and the passage through the different international film festivals leave you?

It was also very interesting, because at these awards ceremonies you always meet the same people and you find that everyone suffers as much as we do, that no one goes to awards ceremonies with a clear mind saying “Well, what if I don’t win? No problem.” Everyone is eager from us, who make a film in Argentina, to the stars and directors of the biggest films.

-You live in Los Angeles, but you will continue to produce films in Argentina.

-Yes. I am part of the Infinity Hill production company, we are producing the new Celina Murga film, The scent of freshly cut grasswith Marina de Tavira, nominated for an Oscar for Romeand Joaquín Furriel, with Martin Scorsese as executive producer.

I am a co-producer of three other Argentinian films that have not yet been announced and I am also lucky enough to be part of God’s daughter, the docuseries that tells the life of Diego Maradona seen by Dalma, one of his daughters, directed by Lorena Muñoz. For me it’s important. I will always continue to make films in Argentina and other countries.

The carpet questions

-What will you ask the Argentine team on the carpet that was red and today will be champagne?

I still haven’t the faintest idea. as it happened in wild tales, by the way, it’s always a lot of fun to see your friends who you’ve been working with for years on the other side of the carpet. It will be very difficult for us to contain ourselves. I think what will happen is that we will laugh too much and I don’t know how much the audience will be interested.

-Do you already have your seat to run from the red carpet to the ceremony at the Dolby Theater?

-I have my seat for the ceremony. Luckily. It’s scientifically proven that I can get from one place to another, fast, but it’s possible.

-You won’t be able to thank if necessary, but if you could, what would your speech be?

-The most important thing would be to thank the people in real life who made the Commission Process possible and who worked tirelessly during these decades for a collective memory to exist. Above all to the victims of state terrorism, who deserve the utmost respect and that the story be told and transmitted from generation to generation in a more immediate field.

“If it doesn’t, the best gift this film can give us is that this story will continue to be told for a long time,” he says.

This movie exists because there were 5,000 people working it, in every role from transportation to catering to starring. And this film is also a little bit about each of those 5,000 people, those 5,000 families. And in a very intimate and very personal place, we, with my wife and children, came to live here in Los Angeles just before the pandemic.

It has been very difficult, so I owe my wife and children more than anyone else for their support through these difficult times. And also to my friend and mentor, Peter Bogdanovich, whom he thanks in the credits of the film, also because he is always there. He is like a second dad who is always there to protect me.

But the truth is that the one who has to give the speech is (Santiago) Miter, and what I want most in the world is to hear Miter. And if it doesn’t happen, because even those things are possible, the best gift this film can give us is that this story continues to be told for a long time. Everyone would say that this is the most beautiful legacy he leaves us Argentina, 1985.
