The screenwriter, director and university professor died on Wednesday at the age of 84 Raphael Philippi. He had been admitted to a health center in the City and reportedly died following complications from an operation he had undergone.
Among Filippelli’s works, the films “There are some boys underneath” (1985), with Luis Brandoni, Luisina Brando and Emilio Alfaro; The absentee (1996) and “Those four notes” (2004).
His latest work was the documentary “No va más” (2021), a raw portrait of old age and death, considered by critics a sort of cinematic testament. The screenwriter of the documentary was the essayist Beatriz Sarlo, with whom she had been in a relationship since the 1980s.
In 2014 Filippelli launched Revista de Cine, a bold proposal in the midst of the depressed scene of publications on the subject. It is published once a year, with the participation of directors, teachers and researchers from different backgrounds, albeit with trajectories converging at the Universidad del Cine (FUC). The proposal mixes generally separate currents, such as criticism with roots in cinema and theoretical approaches with roots in the Academy, while avoiding their rigidities and dogmas.
“With deep sadness and great regret, the Universidad del Cine salutes Rafael Filippelli, a dear professor and unconditional collaborator who has left an unprecedented mark on the academic and cinematographic formation of our institution,” the institution said.
And he added: “Master of multi-level talents, Filippelli has been a professor of directing and screenwriting since the beginning of the University”.
