The complexity of certain relationships, the exercise of sexuality and the functioning of justice Regarding these themes in particular, they are put under the magnifying glass in the work of the British Nina Raines, Consent, which can be seen at the Maipo theater.
The work brings to light uncomfortable themes, such as, rape within marriage, adultery and pacts within a couple and unequal judicial treatment between men and women. But it also demonstrates the universality of these topics, since the work premiered in London in 2017.
The adaptation, made by lenoir apple who directs the production together with Carla Calabrese, places the action between characters of the local bourgeoisie who work in the field of Justice. Besides friendship, they share and discuss different viewpoints on topics such as infidelity, rape and abuse.
Questions to ask yourself
For some time now, the visibility, by feminist movements, of these themes that open up the social debate like never before, also install themselves from the stage and question the spectator. It is inevitable not to marvel, question or be moved by certain behaviors reflected on stage.
The characters played by Mela Lenoir, Diego Gentile, Alejandra Perlusky, Sebastián Suñé, Daniela Pantano, Iride Mockert and Bruno Pedicone They represent, at different times, victims and perpetrators. In between, legality and complexities (often complicated) are always at stake, which can tip the balance towards the least expected side.
Because what also lays bare this piece, which has the virtue of resonating in line with a tremendous topicality, is thisor what seems right always ends up prevailing as true. Because, in the juridical field, there can be more than one truth, even if it is painful for those who have suffered sexual assault in their own flesh.
Hypocrisy
Is that hypocrisy is also in the foreground and, as the characters show, it is usually a yardstick to measure one’s own pain and that of others, to take one side or the other. and if well machismo takes advantage of iteven the attitude of some women leaves much to be desired.
In the couples of Alex and Romina; Di Cata and Edi, who have been together for many years, selfishness and revenge seem to prevail over other more noble feelings. Even the sentimental bond between Luis and Sara that has just begun does not seem to be saved, which explains the climate of disappointment which prevails at the moment.
But even this is accentuated when we talk about social classes, as evidenced by the character of Hilda (Mockert), the raped woman who he asks for justice, but in return he receives indifference and disrespect.
Maipo’s work has an important support in good interpretations and in a staging where cardboard furniture (literal) explains both falsehood and fragility of relationships. Perhaps the text opens up many questions and it would be interesting to delve into some of them.
However, Consent –which comes from the same manufacturers as Come from afar AND The Curious Incident of the Dog at Midnight… it achieves its goal, preoccupied with characters who generate, as the story unfolds, as much empathy as rejection.
