The official statement

Reid was 76 years old and the cause of death was cancer. The news was confirmed by the band on its website on Thursday.

It is with the utmost sadness that we have to announce the passing of lyricist Keith Reid, who died suddenly on 23 March 2023, in a London hospital. He had been receiving cancer treatment for the past two years.

Keith was the co-founder and lyricist of the Procol Harum group, and was the songwriter of their biggest hit, A shade whiter than pale, which contains some of the most enigmatic lyrics of all time. He always said that, at the end of his life, he would explain what it all meant, but unfortunately he didn’t get that chance.

Keith was also involved in a number of other entertainment projects, co-writing what became known as the unofficial Australian anthem. You are the Voicesung by John Farnham.

His family wants to thank the many followers for their kind messages. A private funeral will be held and this page will be updated shortly with details for those wishing to make a memorial donation. Keith will be sorely missed.”

Keith Stuart Brian Reid was born on October 19, 1946 in Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom. After his work with Procol Harum, He created a management, editing and production company as well as a record label.

In the early 1980s, Keith returned to songwriting and moved to New York to revive his career. He immediately had a big hit with an unknown Australian artist, John Farnham, whose recording of You are the Voice remains the best-selling record of all time in Australia.

Throughout his career he has worked with artists such as Annie Lennox, Willie Nelson, Sarah Brightman, Jeff Healey, Heart, Robin Trower, Mavis Staples, Felix Cavaliere, John Waite, Chris Thompson and the Alan Parsons Project.

He has also released two solo albums: The common thread (2008) e in my head (2018).
