Martin Scorsese returns to Cannes after 37 years, with his new film

After a 37-year absence, director Martin Scorsese will be back in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival this year. He will do it for the first time since 1986 with his latest film The flower moon killerswith Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

The organizers of the French competition indicated in a statement this Friday that Scorsese will present this feature in its world premiere on May 20, which has been decided in agreement with Apple Original Films.

The American director, who rthere he received the Palme d’Or in 1976, the highest award for Taxi driverstarring Robert De Niro and become a cult film, it was not part of the official selection since 1986, when it presented after hours. So he took the Best Director award, which would seem to bode well for this comeback.

However, in 1998 the director presided over the jury which awarded the Palme d’Or to the Greek director Theo Angelopoulos for eternity and a dayand four years later, he was also part of the Cinéfondation and the short film jury, together with the Iranian Abas Kiarostami.

His relationship with Cannes

As head of the Film Foundation, an organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and transmission of the world’s film heritage, Scorsese has brought numerous films into the Cannes Classics section.

The film that will mark its return to the official competition of the French festival is The flower moon killers which is set in Oklahoma in the 1920s and narrates the serial killings of several members of the Osage Indian Nationlocated in an oil-rich area. Those crimes then became known as “the reign of terror.”

The octogenarian director from New York is one of the most iconic directors in Hollywood with films such as Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Color of Money, Cape Fear, Age of Innocence, The Aviator, Wolf of Wall Street AND the Irishamong many others.

Based on true events, The flower moon killerschronicles the mysterious serial crimes occurring among members of the Osage tribe in northeastern Oklahoma in the 1920s, which triggers a major investigation by a newly formed FBI led by a young John Edgar Hoover then 29 years old.

In addition to two of his favorite actors and personal friends with whom he works regularly in Leonardo di Caprio and Robert de Niro, are part of the cast of the film, brendan fraser (recent Academy Award for The whale) Lily Glandstone, Jesse Plemons, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion and Tantoo Cardinal.

The De Niro accident

During the filming of The murderers…which took place in 2021, Robert De Niro suffered a leg injury during filming that forced him to rest for a couple of weeks before reprising his role in the film.

Scorsese’s new film should be released in theaters worldwide on October 20 by the production company Paramount Pictures, although a few days before there will be another release, in this case “limited” in some cinemas. it will be the 6th of the same month.
