Warner Bros is lucky to own the rights to Harry Potter, one of Hollywood’s most prized intellectual propertiesbut it also has a drawback: you can’t develop any production without JK Rowling’s consent.
The author have the last word on any derivative works of his seven-novel saga and, it seems, he’s finally being persuaded to produce a television series about Harry Potter, literature’s best-known wizard, with Gandalf’s pardon.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is in talks with JK Rowling so that, with she as producerHarry Potter can be brought to television, to be exact, on HBO Max.
What is the idea of the series?
The initial idea? That each season of fiction might adapt a different literary installment, with all of them showing the learning of Harry Potter, an orphaned boy with a unique history, who enters Hogwarts, a school of magic. Once Rowling’s green light is received, a screenwriter will be sought to lead the project with a new vision.
This means that what until recently seemed unthinkable will be done: that Harry Potter could tell the same story on television that between 2001 and 2011 could be seen in cinemas and which grossed $7.7 billion in box office receipts.
On that occasion the screenwriter Steve Kloves signed the scripts, except the text of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenixwhich Michael Goldenberg wrote, and had four directors: Christopher Columbus (My poor angel), directed by him The philosopher’s Stone AND The secret chamberAlfonso Cuarón (Gravity) who did it The Prisoner of Azkaban.
The British Mike Newell (Four weddings and a funeral) and David Yates (Progress) performed the last adaptations: Newell was responsible for The Order of the Phoenix while Yates wrapped up the saga by leading the final four installments: The Order of the Phoenix, The Mystery of the Prince and the two parts of Deathly Hallows.
A saga that began more than twenty years ago
It must be recognized that, on the one hand, more than two decades have passed since the beginning of the film saga, which has just universalized a literary phenomenon that currently has 500 million copies sold.
On the other hand, just 12 years after the end of Harry’s story, interpretively guided by Daniel RadcliffeEmma Watson AND Rupert Grint such as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
Is the audience ready to see the same story? And most importantly, JK Rowling’s connection could, paradoxically, damage the image of the future television series, taking into account her reputation as a transphobic in the online community? So far, his troubled image hasn’t hurt his success Hogwarts Legacythe video game released in February.
So those who want to invest in a television series whose main attraction is the figure of Harry Potter think that it will not only be a good product, but also a good deal.
