ATAV 2 debuts, with AIDS, the disappeared and the recovery of democracy as its axis

Like a rarity in a television where fiction is scarce and, much more local, Argentina, land of love and revenge 2 (ATAV), will debut on the eltrece screen, this Monday, April 10 at 10:15pm. Regard the second season of the vintage strip produced by Polka, with new characters and stories, but connected to those of the first season, which aired in 2019.

While the first part was set in the 1930s, with the focus on the wave of European immigration that arrived in Argentina in search of a better future, this second season takes a historical leap. AS, the plot is set up during the end of the last military dictatorship and the first years of democracyin the late 70s and early 80s.

This time, pointing to issues such as exile, the disappeared, the emergence of the AIDS virus and the revue theater phenomenon, among other topics. The cast is choral, as there will be many parallel and interconnected stories.

The cast

The protagonists are Federico D’Elía, Federico Amador, Justina Bustos, Juan Gil Navarro, Gloria Carrá, Malena Solda, Tato Quattordio, Toni Gelabert, Andrea Rincón, Belén Chavanne, Nacho Di Marco, Darío Barassi, Alan Daicz and Virginia Lago, among others.

The new characters are the descendants of the Moretti families (Aldo Moretti and La Polaca, played by Gonzalo Heredia and Eugenia “China” Suárez in ATAV 1) and Salvat (Bruno Salvat and Lucia Morel, played by Albert Baró and Delfina Chávez), who had starred in the first season.

Against the backdrop of Santiago Miter’s blockbuster film, Argentina, 1985that time in Argentina will be portrayed in this fiction with books by Lily Ann Martin and Claudio Lacelli, directed by Sebastián Pivotto and Alejandro Ibáñez and general production by Adrian Suar. All chapters had already been recorded last year.

Federico D’Elía, who plays doctor Rafael Machado, is one of the villains of the story, with an ideology forged in the military hospital. “Rafael has a seemingly perfect family, but things happen to him that usually happen to these kids, that go against that ‘perfection’: he hates gays and has a gay sonfor example,” says the actor.

Also, through another of his children, there will be a reference to Falklands War. “And her daughter, Luján, who is her light in her eyes, will have many problems, among others, being a victim of gender-based violence by her husband,” she says. “The big challenge was finding the sweet spot of the character. In the 70s and 80s nothing was politically correct and everything has changed a lot since then.”

According to D’Elía, the new soap opera is a magnifying glass on a historical moment, as a context for the classic soap opera which, responding to the genre, develops several love stories. “True historical references mix, like brushstrokes, with fictional stories“, he explains. “It’s a risk, but it’s very nice that this is being told”.
