Co-founded by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen in 1999 and hosted by Goldenvoice, there world-renowned artists are usually featured, as well as up-and-coming artists and bands gathered from different musical genres such as alternative rock, indie rock, pop, hip hop, electronica and K-pop, as well as installation art and sculpture among others.

The inaugural Festival took place from 9 to 10 October 1999: Beck, Tool and Rage Against the Machine, Chemical Brothers and Morrissey were among the strongest names.

Coachella is considered a pioneer in music and fashion. Katy Perry gave her the good press: “She always presents the best of the year.”

coachella celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019. It ran from April 12-14 and April 19-21 and featured Childish Gambino, Tame Impala and Ariana Grande who, at 25, became the youngest artist to headline the festival and only the their fourth female headliner.

Coachella’s success in its early years proved that American music festivals could function and succeed in destination form, as opposed to a traveling festival.

In the years since Coachella’s success, many other festivals have followed in its footsteps, copying its destination festival format with multiple stages, attractions, art, and camping.

Some of these new festivals have been as successful as Coachella, such as Lollapalooza in Chicago, Governors Ball in New York City, Outside Lands in San Francisco, Stereo Picnic in Bogota, and Bonnaroo in Tennessee.
