In certain Chinese paintings, attempts are made to represent not what is seen but the qualities of what is to be portrayed. A tiger may be a line, but in that line we intend to condense the animal’s courage and ferocity. The likelihood is not in the visible but in the way that line conveys the experience of things according to its author.
