Ed Sheeran today he released his new album – (subtract) and simultaneously uploaded the video clips of the 14 songs.

It’s an album that returns to his roots as a singer and songwriter. It was written in a personal phase of pain and hope.presenting one of the biggest stars on the planet at her most vulnerable and honest.

In anticipation of the release, Ed had released two songs: the soulful closed eyeswhich was their 14th UK No. 1 single, and boats.

The red-haired artist has teamed up with Aaron Dessner (of The National) to write songs and produce, after being introduced by their mutual friend Taylor Swift.

Together, they began crafting the album in February of last year, writing more than 30 songs during a one-month stay in the studio in Kent, Great Britain.

The 14 tracks are linked by an exquisite production that varies between stripped-down folk textures and bolder orchestral arrangements.

In the launch announcement, Ed Sheeran commented: “I was working on it Subtract for a decade trying to carve out the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what he thought it should be”.

And he added: “Then, in early 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health and ultimately the way I viewed music and art. Composing songs is my therapy. It helps me find the meaning of my feelings. I composed without thinking about what the songs would be like; I just wrote what was coming out. And in just over a week, I replaced a decade’s work with my deepest dark thoughts.”

As additional information, he said: “Within a month, my pregnant wife was diagnosed with cancer, which she had no treatment until after giving birth. My best friend and brother, Jamal, died suddenly and I had to defend in court my integrity and career as a songwriter. My life has gone into a spiral of fear, depression and anxiety“.

As she confessed, “I felt like I was drowning, that my head was below the surface and that I was looking up but couldn’t come up for air.”

In conclusion, he said, “As an artist, I don’t think I can credibly present work that doesn’t accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life. This album is just that. It opens the door to trap my soul. For the first time I’m not trying to make an album that people like, I’m putting out something that is honest and true to where I am in my adult life. This is Subtract.”

To celebrate the launch, Ed premiered 14 official videos on YouTube. After the premiere, fans were treated to the after party on YouTube, where he gave an exclusive acoustic rendition of closed eyes.

Also, next Wednesday, May 10, Ed Sheeran will kick off the second season of Apple Music Live. In the intimate live performance, he will present Subtract complete for the first time, along with a 12-piece band, including Aaron Dessner.
