It cannot be said that they were haters, but more than one took to social media on Friday morning to point this out Misanthropethe new movie Damiano Szifronit had drawn fewer than 4,000 spectators on Thursday, the day of its premiere in Argentina.

The numbers of the weekend (38,471 tickets sold, or almost 10 times compared to Thursday) shut their mouths and showed that the thriller with dramatic connotations from the creator of The Simulators had and has the potential to continue its path .on the Argentine billboard .

Now, there were many circumstances why Misanthrope it didn’t become the instant success many had anticipated. We will analyze them.

First, open on the same Thursday as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (393,101 admissions Thursday through Sunday, 435,725 with Wednesday preview functions), may have been the less fortunate decision. Why, if they’re supposedly targeting a slightly different audience? Because all Marvel movies premiere in a huge number of complexes and theaters around the country, leaving very little space -screens-for the rest of the movies that were already on the bill or premiered at the same time.

James Gunn’s film starring Chris Pratt was released in more than half of the theaters across the country (516 theaters in 224 complexes, according to Ultracine). And in the vast majority of its rooms, at all times.

Misanthrope, NO. It got off to a great start in terms of number of theaters (from 123 it went up to 131 as a few were added over the weekend), but that number is misleading, as it only screened at one or two functions in most cases .

In other words, it was necessary to look for, and with a magnifying glass, the times of the screenings.

and another against

And another con, which gives rise to a later and wider debate: many of the copies of the film shot in Montreal, which masquerades as Baltimore, USA, were in Spanish, not in the original language -English- with subtitles. And I know many who wanted to go see the movie ran away in terror when they found out the offer was with Shailene Woodley (under the same star) and Ben Mendelsohn (Ready Player One) dubbed into neutral Spanish.

I do not know if Misanthrope It’s a movie for spectators. But the Argentine public prefers and is used to hearing the original voices, not dubbed as in Spain.

Another analysis that can be done is where people went most massively to see the film in which a police officer is recruited by a disgraced FBI agent, to track down and hunt down a serial killer, who is not a mad terrorist or your typical Hollywood villain.

As to be expected, it did better in cinemas in the city of Buenos Aires than indoors. In Rosario and Córdoba, two strongholds, he didn’t make the difference that was expected.

I insist on this: it’s not that the distribution of the screens was wrong. The problem is that the performances were few, and moreover they were in Spanish…

Another debate is whether Misanthrope should be considered an Argentine film. And, no, because the only thing that is done in our country is the director and cinematographer (Javier Juliá, the same from wild tales and the most recent Argentina, 1985). For those wishing to estimate or evaluate him as an Argentine, Misanthrope in four days on the bill it ranks fourth of the year, behind extortionthat of Francela, suffocatedwith Sbaraglia and Julieta Diaz, Argentina, 1985 AND The Tangalanga method. extortion it has 465,000 since its premiere on April 6.

When the public chooses to go to see a film and pay for the ticket, do they do it based on the names of the performers, the director or the plots? Except for Santiago Mitre, they remember the names of those they directed extortion, suffocated AND The Tangalanga method?

These are not the times when films with casts led by Ricardo Darín, Guillermo Francella, Adrián Suar, Diego Peretti or Pablo Echarri easily reached the one million mark. Except Argentina, 1985, of course.

We will have to see if the number of meeting rooms changes -or not- Misanthrope as of Thursday, where no Hollywood tank premiere is expected. Who decides the production, the number of copies, are the exhibitors, the owners of the complexes and the distributors. And although it may seem that the last word belongs to the first, in reality it is the spectators.
