The Triple Nelson is a trio formed in January 1998 in Montevideo, with Christian Cary on guitar and vocals, Fernando “Paco” Pintos on bass and backing vocals and Rafael Ugo on drums.
They started playing covers of trios and songs they liked. In 2000 they won first prize in a band competition, recorded three songs and then their first album, Dip.
Since then, 25 years later, the group played live or in the recording studio with all their heroes from Uruguay and Argentina: Jaime Roos, Rubén Rada, Divididos, You won’t like it, La Vela Puerca, Memphis La Blusera, Skay Beilinson and Ciro Martínez.
To Buenos Aires
Now, the group will come to Buenos Aires once again, to perform Thursday 11 May in La Trastiendaat 20:30
Just a few days before crossing the pond, Christian Cary spoke with clarion.
“We come from playing at Cosquín Rock in Uruguay -he said- and we have done some concerts in the interior of Uruguay, so we are ready to go to La Trastienda to present the album for the first time after the last day“.
-There is a topic in which Ricardo Mollo participates, no less.
-Yes. In this album we had four great guests: Mollo, Ciro Martínez, Sergio Dawi and Ale Piccone, from La Vela Puerca. We are very happy with it. Also, Ricardo had a lot to do with this record, because he participated a lot in 2020-2021, when we were locked up, and he suggested that we contact the producer Alejandro Vázquez.
Play with all your idols
-In any case, it seems they have already given themselves all tastes and played with the best from Argentina and Uruguay.
-What happens is that we have a 25-year career, so we meet most Uruguayan and also foreign musicians when they come to play. Sometimes we open their shows and other times we go to see them. We have very good friends in the environment, so until now we have lost all desire to play with teachers like Jaime Roos and Rada.
-Who is left on the list?
-Eric Clapton (laughs), but I think it’s a utopia. And even though Ricardo Mollo spent four hours recording with us, I’d love to share the stage and play guitars together.
The Triple in Argentina
-What was the first visit and under what conditions?
-I think it was in 2002 when we started going, without having anything fixed, and we started looking for where to play. Perhaps the first show was in El Sótano, with Piojo Abalos, former drummer of Los Redonditos. There were only three people! What La Triple Nelson has is that we play the same way to 10,000 people or three. We really like being on stage.
-And what was the greatest show you gave here?
-It was an invitation from No Te Va Gustar, to open in front of 50,000 people in the Unico stadium. This was the biggest and most amazing thing we did there. We have only been to festivals like Cosquín Rock and La Trastienda. We keep betting on playing there; We really like the public and they treat us very well. I confirm that they are as expansive as they say.
-Argentine audiences have adopted many Uruguayan bands as their own. Do you think you guys can be profiled to be next?
-We hope to do well as No Te Va Gustar, La Vela Puerca and Cuarteto de Nos. We insist, never give up and move forward. We really like travelling, playing and making records.
