Closer, the southeast is a graphic novel by Juan Sáenz Valiente, of which the duo of mother of pearl crepeDaniel Casabé and Edgardo Dieleke, presented at the recent Baficiand received the Special Mention of the jury of the International Competition.

No, they didn’t fall for the whole thing, and the movie is not only not bad at all, but it’s also a lot of fun.

The characters aren’t exactly young, they’re long over 50. Jorge El Sabueso Villafañez (Juan Carrasco’s protagonist, generally seen in minor roles) is a private investigator. Maybe not like the ones before, or like the Hollywood movies of the 40s and 50s, but he has his tricks of him, he is able to pretend not to receive a payment and he has the answering machine on the office landline . .

A little overweight, which certainly wouldn’t work in his favor if he had to manage someone for some reason, he receives an order from a new customer. Ricardo Zelarrayán (Edgardo Castro) wants me to follow his wife. He thinks that, perhaps, in one of those, he will have a lover.

And here is El Sabueso, sneaking into the theater where Elvira Schulz, who used to be a dancer and is now a choreographer, rehearses and signs her dancers. And she follows her to El Tigre: she takes a collective boat and discovers she has a house on the islands.

Juan Carrasco is Jorge El Sabueso Villafañez, a character and a private detective as atypical as the film.

Dancing naked in the Tiger

And even more. We said that Elvira had been a dancer: now she dances, alone, outdoors and naked, in the middle of a storm.

Which Elvira is played by Katja German It’s not a minor thing. The actress is at the center of the Hound’s investigations, and it will be necessary to understand why, what are the reasons why her husband distrusts her.

The film combines several dreamlike elements, which makes it very surreal at times. There are dreams, fantasies and unexpected scenes – a costume party is one of the surprising points -, a path that can engulf a character, and very little desire on the part of the filmmakers to explain in words what we are seeing.

Good for that(s).

the southeast it must be called what it’s called. The Mastiff was born in the middle of a southeast, his mother did not arrive in time where she was supposed to give birth. The meeting between Villafañez and Elvira, as has already been said, takes place in the midst of a storm.

But also the southeast it is armed, stitched together from different moments that may seem minimal or superfluous. Villafañez’s meetings with his friends, in a bar or going to play paddle tennis, for example, which serve to “color” the story, and do it even if you want more company with the viewer.
