Because Cannes in France is a kind of Miami in the United States: many Parisians decide, when they retire, to move to this city on the Côte d’Azur, because with what they earn by selling their properties in the City of Light Here they have a lot to lead a life very good.

Everything gets more expensive in Cannes for two weeks. For example, the cost of hotel rooms near the Palais des Festivals, where almost everything happens for twelve days. A simple, simple room costs 380 euros today, and outside the Festival window it can cost half or a third. This data was confirmed by the same hotel employees, and by reviewing reservations from weeks ago.

A bowl of ice cream -and that the temperature is low considering that in just over a month we are about to enter summer, and it goes from 11°C to 23°C- can cost no less than 4 or 5 euros (at the Blue, between $2,000 and $2,500). A Reine pizza (muzzarella and ham) does not go below 14 euros. More or less, between double and triple that in a pizzeria on via Corrientes.

The shops on Rue D’Antibes, the street where the major clothing brands are concentrated, proudly display the poster of the 76th edition of the most prestigious festival in the world in their windows. Well, see also the picture of Catherine Deneuvein black and white, in Saint-Tropez, during filming La Chamade (1968), by director Alain Cavalier, based on the novel by Françoise Sagan, in the windows of macaroni, bars and restaurants.

And the daughter of Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni, the actress Chiara Mastroianni, will be the godmother of the ceremony and presenter of the 76th edition this Tuesday. the protagonist of eurekathe film by our compatriot Lisandro Alonso, which will be screened on Friday at the Cannes Premiere, will welcome the jury on stage at the Grand Théâtre Lumière of the Palais des Festivals, including Ruben Östlund as president of the jury together with Maryam Touzani, Denis Ménochet, Rungano Nyoni, Brie Larson, Paul Dano, Atiq Rahimi, our compatriot Damiano Szifron and Julia Ducournau.

Last year, 344 cinemas welcomed thousands of spectators to watch the ceremony live. Also this year the opening ceremony and the opening film (Jeanne-du-Barrystarring Johnny Depp) will be broadcast live in cinemas, an initiative promoted by the Cannes Film Festival, together with France Télévisions, the Fédération Nationale des Cinémas Français and the CNC.

the calm before the storm

For now, all is calm around the Palais. Before a short storm broke out -and they announce rain for the moment of the opening ceremony tomorrow, Tuesday at 19:00-, there were few fans who stopped with their chairs and metal stairs to have a privileged place on the Croisette , the coastal road where the black cars will arrive and deposit the stars at the entrance of the red carpet.

There are rumors that there will be demonstrations around the Palais. The situation in France is not easy -but, next to ours…- due, among other things, to the pension reform.

The prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes department has issued a decree prohibiting demonstrations for the entire duration of the festival, and up to one day more, Sunday 28 May. It obeys “the considerable risk of public order problems”, and it is known that it will allocate a “reinforcement” of four anti-riot companies, in addition to the Gendarmerie and the Cannes police, who patrol the streets with its 200 agents, on foot, on horseback and with dogs.

Other years the snipers were also stationed on the roofs of the Palais, watching over everything. This year, just in case, there will be 833 cameras.

Under the motto Il The CGT makes its cinema in Cannesa demonstration is also planned for the weekend, in front of one of the luxury hotels – the Carlton -, on the Croisette, but a little far from the enclosure of the Palais -, and on Sunday a street cinema exhibition, right there.

But social discontent is not the only one leading to change.

Without going any further, after being criticized for not featuring more women in its programming in the official section, as of this Tuesday Cannes will break its own record, with seven films by directors for the Palme d’Or. the chimeraby Alice Rohrwacher; Club Zeroby Jessica Hausner; L’Ete Dernierby Catherine Breillat; Stroke anatomyby Justine Triet; Banel & Adamaby Ramata-Toulaye Sy; I returned itby Catherine Corsini, and the documentary by Kaouther Ben Hania Les Filles d’Olfa.

That’s 33.33% of the 21 films that will compete for the Palme d’Or, which will reward Damián Szifron among others within two Saturdays. There is still much to see and hopefully surprise.
