Cannes is not a small city, but neither is it huge, on the Côte d’Azur: it has 75,000 inhabitants, double that of Monaco, but one fifth of Nice. And a day before the inauguration, meet Rue d’Antibes with Damiano Szifron it is a surprise, still far from the Palais des Festivals, where the Festival takes place.
With a few days beard, the director of wild tales, who on Saturday 27 May will be part of the Jury that will award the Palme d’Or, was with a credit card in one hand and a gala tuxedo in the other. Like any neighborhood kid, he came from taking off his overalls from the dry cleaners, and was heading to the Hotel Martínez, one of the Five Stars where there are juries (the other is the Carlton).
But they left the Martínez, all together, with Ricardo Darin, Oscar Martinez, Erica Rivas AND Leonardo Sbaragliain 2014 when they presented themselves in competition wild tales, the first Saturday of the Festival, and in the central hour. Maybe that’s why Damián, who had the choice, was left with Martínez’s option.
Damien arrived on Sunday, alone. His wife, the actress María Marull-Pasternak’s ex-girlfriend, the pilot who crashed the plane in the first of wild tales– will arrive to accompany him tomorrow Wednesday. And Szifron has no time to rest: last night he had an informal dinner with the rest of the jury and Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Festival and who invited him to be part of the jury, and this Tuesday is the afternoon press conference, and l official opening at night
And it will be stick by stick until the night of Saturday the 27th.
And if it rains?
It seems that the threat of rain will accompany many days of the Festival -they have in fact announced thunderstorms for today, from 6 to 8 pm: the gala is at… 7 pm, but the clouds have dissipated for now-, which complicates not only the access to the Palais des Festivals. It is here that the bulk of the exhibited works are concentrated, facing the Mediterranean Sea on one side and the Croisette on the other, the road that runs along the Mediterranean and which is closed to traffic around the Palais, except for official cars, those who bring the stars to the red carpet.
One of the first to arrive will be Johnny Depp. The actor had a very eventful 2022, but in other closed areas, which were not the cinemas but the courts. A year has passed since the verdict for the libel trial with his ex, the actress Amber Heard, and Depp arrives to present Jeanne-du-Barry at the opening ceremony of the Festival.
It’s his first film in three years since Minamata photographer He presented it on February 20, 2020 at the Berlin Film Festival, days after the world shut down due to the coronavirus. We will talk about the film, which we will see tonight in the Sala Lumière, the largest in the Palais, and in which the actor from Pirates of the Caribbean plays King Louis XV with a white wig and a French accent, directed by local actress, screenwriter and director Maïwenn , who embodies the title character.
And there will be an Argentinian presence from the very beginning of the Festival, in an edition that on paper seems stronger in terms of films and quality than what was offered a year ago, when it celebrated its 75th anniversary.
Damián Szifron, which premiered less than two weeks ago Misanthrope In Argentina, which reaches nearly 100,000 spectators, he is part of the jury that will award the Palme d’Or to the best film. Director of the simulators was here competing for that award in the 2014 edition with wild taleswhich began in Cannes.
And few know that Szifron is back in Cannes between stories and this year, when he stopped by the Cannes market a few years ago to raise money to film Misanthrope.
The Swede Ruben Östlund (winner of two Palmas d’Or, for the square AND The triangle of sadness) to his colleagues and compatriots Rodrigo Moreno and Lisandro Alonso, because their respective films will be in other sections. Moreno brings The criminalsa three-hour drama with Esteban Bigliardi, Daniel Elías, Germán de Silva, Laura Paredes and Javier Zoro, among others, in Un Certain Regard, another of the Cannes competitions.
And Alonso comes with eurekaand satisfies a curious fact: all his films, six, since he presented Freedom, in the 2001 edition at the age of 25, were in Cannes. In eurekawhich will be seen at the Cannes Premiere, the director is once again directing Viggo Mortensen -it is not known whether he will come or not, it seems not-, as in Ohin competition at Un Certain Regard in 2014.
Yep, same year Szifron was there wild tales in the main competition.
Moreno arrives in Cannes today, Tuesday, and Alonso, Thursday.
There is another Argentine co-production with Chile: settlers, the debut of Chilean Felipe Gálvez, with the participation of Luis Machín, in Un Certain Regard. The film begins in 1901, when Segundo, a Chilean mestizo, Maclenan, an English soldier, and Bill, an American mercenary, embark on a horse expedition to delimit and reclaim the lands that the state has granted to José Menéndez.
And among the shorts, as often happens, there is an Argentinian hope: none of thisby our compatriots Patricio Martínez and Francisco Cantón.
We said that in this edition there would be a lot of good things to see. And in and out of the competition for the Palme d’Or, because it is one of the most anticipated films of the year Indiana Jones and the Call of Fatefifth and should be the last adventure of the archaeologist played by Harrison Ford.
Steven Spielberg no longer directs, but produces. Behind the scenes was James Mangold, the director of Logano, with Hugh Jackman, and the cast is fantastic. Will Spielberg come? Better watch it now or wait six weeks until it opens in Argentina on Thursday June 29.
The one in Indiana – which at two hours and 22 minutes will be the longest of the saga that began in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark– will be out of competition, like The flower moon killersthe return of Martin Scorsese to the French Riviera after after hourin 1986. In the cast Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone and the last Oscar winner, Brendan Fraser.
The plot? In the 1920s, members of the Osage tribe in the United States are mysteriously murdered, leading to an FBI investigation. Another one that is long: 3 hours and 26 minutes, and that sounds very strong to compete for an Oscar. It will only premiere in theaters in October and then on Apple TV.
And what Pedro Almodóvar will have done strange way to livethe 30-minute film with which he returns to Cannes, of which he is a repeated figure, after the shooting parallel mothers in Venice in 2021. It is known for being a queer western in which Pedro Pascal directed (The Mandalorian AND The Last of Us) and Ethan Hawke. He will be seen by Mubi in Argentina.
The three titles mentioned do not compete here except for the attention of journalists, they are, as they say, “out of competition”. This relieves them of the pressure to go to awards, which will happen to several talented international directors, who will come to Cannes with many stars.
Among them, Wes Anderson, who will arrive with the City of Asteroids, such as Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Scarlett Johansson and Tilda Swinton. And Todd Haynes, leading may decemberwith Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, and will see the start of the idolof HBO, the series co-directed by and starring musician The Weeknd, which will debut in streaming on June 4th.
And among others, they will also arrive in search of the Golden Palm Aki Kaurismaki (Fallen leaves), former main prize winner Hirokazu Kore-eda (Monster), Nanni Moretti (The sun of the future), Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Speaking of dried herbs), Ken Loach (won twice, will now race with The Old Oak) and Wim Wenders (port perfect days).
Also present was the veteran and never Palma winner Marco Bellocchio, who will present quickie.
And there will be a return, that of Víctor Erice (The spirit of the hive). The Spanish director hadn’t directed a film since then the quince sun (1992), which here in Cannes won the Jury Prize, and in Close your eyes (out of competition) two Argentines worked. The music was composed by Federico Jusid (The secret in their eyes), and Soledad Villamil complements the cast.
