Without chasing him – even if as the note goes by he will say that he doesn’t believe in flukes – the singer with more than 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify marks another milestone in his career.

what you see is what is available

Mary is what is seen and what is not. The one that she parades in double costume changes and laden makeup on a carpet, but hours after venturing onto the big screen, she assumes she’s meticulous beyond measure. “The result was a team effort between them, my producer and I,” she clarifies.

-You come from the Gardel Awards, you stood out in Miami (with the title of “Visionary”) and now in the cinema. You are everywhere, Maria.

-Yes, the truth is happy. All very expansive, all very thousand. But hey, I’ve gotten used to the pace of life.

-Would you use one of those movie stunt doubles, to meet all your commitments?

-For some things I say yes, the truth. But honestly I really enjoy it. The song for the film was a beautiful journey. A really long tour and a lot of fun.

-How was the route of that tour? With final destination on the big screen.

-They called my manager months ago, with the proposal to be part of one of the songs together with two other women. I go to the studio, write my verse and send it, which was on tour in Mexico and I wrote it quickly in a hotel.

But to the people of soundtrack they liked it so much that they told me: “We want you to make a song by yourself”. News, tremendous! and they sent me it heals you, which was already written. And from there it was like a tug of war. Because I like to write my own verses and what I will sing…

-And did you relax?

-I sent in my verses and a little bit of everything, so they have plenty of them (Laughter). And there were quite a few 50s and 50s, with my stamp. I stayed calm and even with the identity of the song because we wanted to leave the Latin thing well marked.

-Hollywood, the mecca of cinema, is the golden dream of many artists. Was it part of yours too?

-I had never really thought about it, it wasn’t in my plans. Obviously it’s a great opportunity and I’m honored by it. Now, if they call me again, I want to do another song because it captivated me.

Vin Diesel wanted it to be her

-How were the scenes of the meeting with Vin Diesel? It’s always more interesting behind what you see in the photos and what the cameras don’t record.

Yes, I think the same. Everything that was when we met and there were no cameras around was very genuine. It’s divine, even Michelle (Rodríguez). She’s Latina so we were there talking: “Where are you from? And do you like the mate?”, I wondered. Vin told me, “I wanted you to do the song. I heard it and I liked it”. Is that he, if I’m not mistaken, is also a producer of the film.

-Did you teach him a few words in Spanish?

-No, I didn’t have time to teach him. He actually knows a lot of Spanish, but he uses it more gracefully, have you seen? He blurts out a word and laughs.

-For example?

-When we arrived and all the audience was already there, they shouted: “María Becerraaaa”. “Argentinaoooo”, “Mexicooooo”. She knew the names of the countries and the word strange. It was a birthday for him.

-And you defend yourself with English?

I communicate the truth quite well. More than anything when I’m there and spend about 15 days there, I’m totally up to date.

-You also met J Balvin (with whom they share the worldwide hit “Qué Más Pues?”), which is part of the soundtrack.

-Yes, we wanted to do it first in Medellín, but we didn’t succeed encounter. But we feel like meeting up and making another song. We’ve talked to do it and we’re in those plans, but we both work the same way, in the studio and one-on-one. Plus we have a friendship involved so we want to plan a meeting.

-Is bringing urban sounds to the big screen another achievement for your generation?

-Completely. And also in a film that will be widely seen in the United States and in countries where Spanish is not the native language. The words, the rhythm of the Latinos, like the dembow, seems like a super important brand to me. I am aware that with the support of the film and the promotion, the subject will grow tremendously.

-Whether it’s a woman at the head of that list, it’s always one step further, right?

-Yes, in the saga the main songs have always been by men and in this one I feel that I have been given a lot of prominence: regarding the song and the scenes from the film they gave us because we were one of the few video clips, I don’t know if the ‘unique, that they gave us the scenes to use and that they financed the video clip.

-Your videos also have a very cinematic aesthetic. Are you a cinephile?

-I… (thinks) not really. I can’t be that hooked.

-Your generation is more supportive of the series.

-Yes, They are more of the series and not even the long serieshuh. I think it’s among this generation that there’s a lot of anxiety, and you can’t hold our attention for more than 30 minutes, because we pick up a cell phone and see something else.

Casting for the Fito series

-The one about Fito Páez, the Netflix boom, haven’t you seen it?

I haven’t seen it yet. I want to see her. They raved to me. In fact, I had been casting for the series at the time.

-Oh really? For which character?

-You can’t tell which one (laughs), because I didn’t stay. But yeah, that was about 4 years ago. I didn’t even make music, nothing. And I didn’t stay, of course. But hey, this whole pandemic thing happened and I thought it was never going to happen.

-Did you want to act at that moment?

-It was a wonderful opportunity that presented itself and the truth is that I don’t consider myself an actress. I like it, I do what I can. But she didn’t frustrate me either, not even there, because I give myself completely to music. I also like acting, but it’s more secondary.

Can you imagine a series about your life?

-I think so. I would love to, indeed I think it would be very interesting and there are so many things to tell. We are currently shooting a documentary, about two years ago, and I think it will take much longer. It doesn’t have a name at the moment, I’m sure it will be something like this The Argentinian girl.

-It is that in your story it is very angelic: your beginnings as a Youtuber and the subsequent musical rise in record time.

-I strongly believe in energies, in the context in which you move, in what you vibrate and transmit. I always think it’s a circle. I feel that if you do wrong, it will inevitably come back to you.

He continues: “If I want to find a job for this, I move to where I know those opportunities can present themselves. I don’t believe in luck either. If my rep ever saw me and wanted me to make music, it was because I made my own videos and I was in the right places for him to see me sooner or later. It’s about working and demonstrating to make it happen.”

people who don’t

-What do you think of the people who criticized your beginnings and with the newspaper on Monday, took the wave of your successes?

– I don’t know, I feel they are interested people. It happened to me with many people. With a boyfriend I had in elementary school, what he did to me was horrific, and to this day the boy continues to tell stories. My sister makes a living and comments, “My ex sister-in-law.” And I was 13 when I met him! There are people who don’t let go. It happened to me with people from school that I didn’t even talk to anymore.

-Who do you call first when such significant events happen to you, like the soundtrack of a Hollywood movie?

-And, usually my boyfriend (J Rei, urban genre singer). My mom too, even though it’s more difficult to find her because she uses her cell phone less and more if there’s a different time zone. But my boyfriend is active all day we talk 24/7. he Stands up so he can talk to me or vice versa. I tell him everything.

He and my relatives were at the Gardel Awards. He made me very happy, because usually the rewards are in other countries and many people in my family don’t have a visa. But they were able to come here and there were my nieces, my mother-in-law…

-And your mother records you with her cell phone from the audience, as if it were your first show…

-Yes, my mother is my number one fan. I think it happens to all of us. She loves to record everything and was surrounded by people she admires. She loves Iván de Pineda, Raúl Lavié. I was at a birthday.

Speed, with respect

-We close with the film, one of the highest-grossing action sagas in cinema. Are you a friend of speed?

I have a lot of respect for him, I really do. For example, my boyfriend likes it a lot. And when he wants to drive fast, I let him go by himself, because I’m scared. It’s not even that he’s driving like crazy on the Pan-American. He does it where he can, but he scares me a lot. As much as I see the aisle empty and nothing there, I still think so many things can happen.

Although her third album is in the works, it is not for the anxious, since María Becerra does not anticipate or announce upcoming dates. What is concrete is the novel’s role, in the process of discovery, which it has as producer of itself.

“I’m getting more and more involved and it’s something that interests me, a goal that I have. Before I can make it happen, I’d already feel quite satisfied. The fact that I could write them, interpret them and even compose them musically would be something incredible and I don’t think I would leave the house,” she warns.

Are you preparing to take that step?

Yes indeed I am. There are three songs that I was already producing. I’m not telling you that I can take Pro Tools (music editing, recording and production program) and create a beat from scratch, but I play the keyboard, throw horn arrangements at you and create a certain melody.
