The opera premiered as a one-act farce in Naples in 1827 and was highly successful. Donizetti presented the two-act version in Milan in 1831.

Inexplicably, the work disappeared from the repertoire for more than a century, and was revived for the first time in 1963 in Siena. Berlioz wrote in his memoirs of his enthusiasm for the work, considered lost for four generations until it was discovered in 1963 in the Music Library of Siena and remade in the same year.

History

Far from being one of the most represented operas, the story takes place in a small provincial theateran opera company attempts to rehearse a new titled work Romulus and ErsiliaRoman melodrama “a la Metastasio”.

But the stardom of all the components, their meanness, envy and ridiculous power struggles make the work of the librettist and composer impossible.

In the midst of these difficulties comes the matriarch of the “second woman” of the opera, herself a retired singer, absolutely dissatisfied with the lack of prominence given to her daughter.

Faced with threats from the mother, the writers and producer are forced to reassign the lead roles, generating even worse results. Faced with the imminence of the first catastrophic, only a miracle can save them.

Donizetti described very well and amusingly the typical conditions of small stages, not very different from large theatres, which he knew from personal experience. The composer was known in all operatic capitals and knew perfectly well how the intrigues of the opera world worked.

In Long live mom! there is a critique of the excesses and tyranny of the divos, their pettiness, envy and power strugglesR; a parody of hierarchies within operatic productions, with the creators – composer and librettist – subordinate to the whims of the singers, the dispositions of businessmen and the arbitrariness of the audience.
