Juventus opera will open its new season at Teatro Avenida with a different proposal: Rustic CavalryFrom Peter Mascagniwill be presented with a Italian Song Festivalinstead of his traditional duo with clownthe drama in two acts by Leoncavallo, will both be directed by André Dos Santos and staged by Ana D’Anna.
Cavalleria rusticana, one of the emblematic works of Italian verismo, is one of the most influential and performed operas All over the world. Composed in 1890 by Pietro Mascagni on texts by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti, taken from the opera of the same name by Giovanni Verga, it has a single act divided by an interlude.
Regard a melodramatic and costume portrait of late 19th century Sicily. The work tells the story of a tragic love triangle with two women in love with the same man and a betrayed husband in between. In a single day passion, jealousy, despair, anger, revenge, recrimination and remorse are juxtaposed.
One Easter morning, in a Sicilian village, Santuzza tries to win back her lover Turiddu. While he was in the army, his lover Lola marries the wealthy Alfio. When Turiddu returns and hears the news, he begins a brief love affair with Santuzza, another girl from the town, who ends up betraying him by returning to Lola, her ex-girlfriend.
Santuzza had been excommunicated for her relationship and the consequent pregnancy, mad with jealousy she tells Alfio of the love story between Lola and Turridu. Alfio, full of rage, challenges him to a duel. Turridu, after saying goodbye to her mother and asking her to take care of Santuzza if necessary, leaves her for her fateful encounter.
Tribute to the Godfather
Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the trilogy The GodfatherJuventus Lyrica wants to pay homage to him with the staging of Mascagni’s opera, the same that Francis Ford Coppola has chosen to close his Italian-American saga.
In The Godfather III, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) and his family are at the Sicilian Opera to attend the debut of their son Anthony as an opera singer. That night was represented Rustic Cavalry.
On leaving the theatre, the assassin hired to kill Michael shoots him on the steps but misses and his daughter Mary is the one who dies, having received a shot which kills her instantly.
Play the famous Intermezzo from Mascagni’s opera as Al Pacino lets out his silent cry. The film, and the trilogy, ends with the music of the famous Italian composerwho based his stardom on a single work, written early in his career.
The famous Intermezzo for strings, which is the passage to the second tableau, coincides in the story with the revenge that Alfio unleashes against Turiddu.
What will the program be like?
The program of Italian Song Festival includes works by Ruggero Leoncavallo, Stanislao Gastaldon, Luigi Denza, Francesco Paolo Tosti, Ernesto De Curtis, among others, curated, prepared and orchestrated by maestro Antonio Russo in 2020.
The opera will be interpreted by Marcelo Gómez and Ramiro Pérez (the roles of Turiddu will alternate), Cintia Velázquez and Marianela Finocchiaro (Santuzza), Rocío Arbizu and Estefanía Cap (Lola), Roxana Deviggiano and Milagros Seijó (Mamma Lucia) and Juan Salvador Trupia (Alfio), among others.
The appointment is on Friday 2 June at 20:00, Avenida de Mayo 1222. There will also be shows on Sunday 4 June, at 17:30, and Saturday 10 June, at 20:00.
