Its beginnings

He was born on September 10, 1911 as Nilda Elvira Vattuone in the city of Bonifacio in Buenos Aires, but registered and raised in Guaminí, where she lived until the age of 11, when her father died and she moved to Buenos Aires with her mother and 10 siblings.

Nelly herself said that her father was an acquaintance of Gardel and that on several occasions, when he visited the city of Buenos Aires, they went together to the Hippodrome.

“When in 1918 Gardel appeared in the city, together with José Razzano, my father and other neighbors began to sell tickets and organized the presentation of the duo. The theater was full. Then they stopped at my house. My brothers and I we watched everything from a window. My father, as a good Italian of the time, didn’t allow us to mix with the elderly. His image remained imprinted on me. Gardel was fat and had his hair parted in the middle,” he told the historian Nestor Pinzón.
