Disney has honored itself Desire: the power of desires, as the company celebrates its first 100 years. And he did it with a musical film, attached to many of the advice, clichés or whatever you want to say that usually populate this type of film, clearly aimed at the little ones.
More than anything, answering this question: What can happen if you wish on a star and the star responds?
We see. We have a young, friendly, risk-taking girl, animals that talk, townspeople who spend their time singing, and a sorcerer who is the Magnificent King in the City of Roses, a place that seems fascinating, but… I men are bad, women are good.
They all live in harmony, knowing that the King keeps their wishes and, occasionally, when one comes of age, grants them, though not all. The fact is that the boy appropriates many of them, and those that seem unachievable, that go against his thinking or, at best, that are of no use to the island of Rosas, he leaves directly “saved”.
Asha, the young woman at the beginning, will get closer to the king, because she hopes to get a job as the king’s apprentice, and over time she will discover the hidden magic of the ruler, who lies to his subjects. And since there are wishes that will never be fulfilled, she wants to steal them and deliver them to their true owners.
An important fact is that when children express their wishes to Magnifico (voice of Chris Pine), they forget them. The law is made… The desires, represented here as foamy, blue, floating, shiny balls, do not belong to Magnifico, but he likes to believe that he is in charge of them, when it should be the opposite.
When you wish on a star…
Asha (voiced by Ariana DeBose in the original) lives with her grandfather. Her father, a philosopher with a passion for stargazing, died when she was 12. And she goes there, near a tree that reminds her of her father, makes a wish for her and a little star comes down to her and accompanies her.
The boy Valentino (who will be able to speak, thanks to the star) and the same star to whom Asha expresses her best wishes are the co-protagonists of this, as we were saying, musical comedy, with beautiful songs, but without any success which can be hummed at the exit of the cinema, type Coconut, Frozen OR The beauty and the Beast.
Co-directed by veteran Chris Buck (Frozen) and newcomer Fawn Veerasunthorn (which I worked on Moana AND Raya and the Last Dragon), wish has some changes. For now, the protagonist is a 17-year-old girl with no love interest in sight. If there’s anything Asha cares about, it’s her family and her wide circle of friends.
Just as you discover a new Disney presentation, don’t move from your seats during the closing credits: you’ll find many, if not all, of the company’s most endearing characters.
If you find a subtitled copy, in addition to those mentioned you will be able to listen to Victor Garber, who was Thomas Andrews in Titanicand Evan Peters, from the miniseries Dahmer.
