The José Ignacio Festival began with cinema under the stars

On Saturday, at the Bajada de los Pescadores, in José Ignacio (Uruguay), twelve hundred people attended the event and the opening show of the 14th edition of the JIIFF José Ignacio International Film Festival, a meeting which will take place until January 21st. , which is sponsored by Clarion.

As usual and if the weather permits, the screening took place outdoors, after watching the sunset (the sun setting on the horizon above Punta del Este). There was a DJ set led by Fer Gómez (of Ferona’s legendary bar, La Juanita). And under the starry sky, the first film of the Feature Film Competition was screened for the first time throughout Latin America, Anatomy of a fall (Anatomy of a fall), by French director Justine Triet, who recently won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film and, in May, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

And if Buenos Aires has the Cannes Film Week between November and December, in this edition of the José Ignacio Festival there are many films that have been in competition at Cannes.

There are seven international films participating in the Feature Film Competition (the winning film of which comes from the public’s daily vote) and five works by Uruguayan filmmakers that will make up the Short Film Competition; all as exclusive previews for the region.

Free features

The shows are offered with free access in three venues: the traditional Bajada de los Pescadores, the VIK Pavilion and, new this year, the Bodega Oceánica José Ignacio.

We’ll see on Wednesday Perfect days, by Wim Wenders, with Koji Yakusho, Tokio Emoto and Arisa Nakano. The appointment is at the José Ignacio Oceanic Winery, at 7:00 pm.

There will be no screenings on Thursday, but there will be on Friday, whenever The wind that sweeps away, by Paula Hernández, with Alfredo Castro, Sergio López, Almudena González and Joaquín Acebo. Shows are at 7.30pm and 11pm, at the VIK Pavilion.

Furthermore, a curatorial look at parallel activities: Working JIIFF, the industrial space of JIIFF, kicks off on Thursday 18 January, where more than 60 participants from different parts of the world will work on audience construction, in search of new voices in fiction cinema and strengthening Latin American and international alliances. This year the collaborations with the Industry Academy of the Locarno Festival and the British Film Institute stand out.
