Leo Danthe popular singer from Santiago who conquered the Ibero-American music industry after a devastating commercial success in Argentina, born in the 60s with “the New Wave”, announced in the United States his retirement from the stage at the age of 81.
The farewell of the man born in Villa Atamisqui will not pass through Argentina. His latest tour will begin on April 6 and end on June 8 in Chicago, US, under the title “The Goodbye of a Legend”, his production company said.
“It’s been a wonderful journey but it’s time to close this chapter”said the man who was an emblem of Argentine television in the 60s and did it more than a thousand songs composed and 40 million records sold.
Leopoldo Dante Tévez was born on March 22, 1942 in Atamisqui, Santiago del Estero, where since his adolescence, guitar in hand, he composed his first songs.
Success was a bolt from the blue that changed his life. “One day I went to ask for a test and in fifteen days I became a national success”He recalled this a few years ago in an interview with Clarín. It happened to the record company CBS: there he took the first three letters of their names (Leo and Dan) and never stopped.
Those were times of rock and pop sweetened and prefabricated by companies trying to build a youth market with figures like Palito Ortega, Nicky Jones, Jolly Land, Chico Novarro and Violeta Rivas, among others.
His first success was “Celia” and they followed him “Fanny”, “How much I miss you my love” and “Santiago dear”. His friends say that his archive contains no fewer than 1,500 original songs.
His figure became popular as a sort of provincial gallant who wanted to escape the condition of being single by riding a horse a song that became a hit: “Free, single and without anyone”.
