Their paths crossed, more or less, in Batman begins (more on that later). But it took another kind of summer blockbuster, a three-hour biopic about the triumphs and tribulations of a theoretical physicist working in New Mexico in the 1940s, to finally bring them together.

Since its premiere in July, Oppenheimer raised nearly a billion dollars worldwide, received critical acclaim and was nominated for numerous awards, including 13 Oscars. Among these nominations are three for Nolan, 53, for best film, best director and best adapted screenplay, and one for best supporting actor for Downey, 58, for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss, the main character’s nemesis, similar to Salieri. The nominations are not the first received (they are counted OppenheimerDowney received three and Nolan eight), but neither had ever won and are now considered favourites.
