The four members of Beatles They will have a biopic each, all under the direction of Sam Mendesthe famous director of American beauty, 1917Empire of light AND 007: Operation Skyfall.
For the first time the Beatles, who for years refused to give up their image rights, will open the doors of their lives and their music for a film project.
The announcement was made by Sony Pictures, who confirmed a deal to tell the stories Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
The films, conceived by Mendes, are expected to be released in an innovative way and could coexist in theaters. Exact release plans will be announced at a later date. Sony expects them to be released in 2027.
The details
McCartney, Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison approved the project through the band’s Apple Corps Ltd. company. Sony Music Publishing controls the rights to most of the Beatles’ songs.
“I am honored to tell the story of the greatest rock band of all time and am excited to challenge the concept of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” Sam Mendes said in a statement.
He also explained that each film will be told from the point of view of a Beatle.
“We want this to be a unique, emotional and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives, telling a single story about the most famous band of all time,” said producer Pippa Harris. “To have the blessing of the Beatles and Apple Corps to do this is an immense privilege.”
The Beatles’ most famous forays into film came in their early years. Between 1964 and 1970 they appeared in five films, including A night of a hard day) since 1964, Help! (Help!) in 1965 and the lively Yellow submarine of 1968. Naturally they have been the subject of numerous documentaries, the most recent of which is Peter Jackson’s 2021 The Beatles: Going Back.
In 2023, the four Beatles reunited with the help of artificial intelligence in the recently released song Occasionally. The recording was made possible thanks to the technology used by Jackson in Take up againand contained a music video made by the New Zealand director.
Other musical films
Attempts to dramatize the Beatles’ story have been more sporadic and less impactful. A 1979 biopic, made while Lennon was still alive, titled The birth of the Beatleswas produced with the band’s original drummer, Pete Best, as consultant.
The independent film of 1994 Backbeat chronicled Lennon’s relationship with poet and bassist Stuart Sutcliffe before the Beatles became famous. AND Wandering boy The 2009 film starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a teenage Lennon.
But in the last decade, music biographies have become big business. Box office hits like Bohemian Rhapsody about Queen singer Freddie Mercury, Rocket man about Elton John and Elvis about the King of Rock have pushed Hollywood executives to chase the next blockbuster.
Bob Marley, the legend, released on Valentine’s Day and produced with the Marley Estate, was the No. 1 film. 1 in theaters in the US and Canada last week. There is a Michael Jackson biopic coming out soon that is in production.
“Today’s cinematic events must have a cultural impact. “Sam’s bold, large-scale vision is this and so much more,” said Tom Rothman, president and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group.
The combination of Mendes’ team “with the music and stories of four young people who changed the world will shake audiences around the planet,” Rothman said. “We are deeply grateful to all parties and look forward to breaking some rules with Sam’s unique artistic vision.”
