In Duna: second part Denis Villeneuve expands what he did in the First part, with that feeling of epic grandeur, which cinema lacks so, so much, with what it has and how it tells it visually. Greig Fraser’s cinematography for which he won the Oscar Duna: first part and illuminated RogueOne AND The darkest nightso he knows what it’s like to film in open, deserted spaces – and the new visual effects, art design and costumes do the rest.

In the first movie Dune, released two and a half years ago – if you don’t remember it you can see it in the cinema or on Max, in streaming – we were in a very, very distant future. The actions basically took place on the desert planet Arrakis. The Atreides clan, by order of the Emperor, was to take control of the planet, which had been plundered by those commanded by Harkonnen.

The fact is that the precious element is produced there: spices. Harkonnen’s men (Stellan Skarsgård attack by surprise and Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) manage to escape and ally themselves with the native Fremen. Among them is Chani (Zendaya) who, if nothing happened in the first one, will now see Paul in a different light.

And among the Fremen who host them there is also Stilgar (Javier Bardem), absolutely convinced that Paul is the Messiah.

Here, the first part. The Second begins immediately afterwards. The Fremen boycott the spice, which is what the Harkonnen family wants to regain, while the Emperor, who now has a face (Christopher Walken) and his daughter Iluran (Florence Pugh) plan a new distribution of power, believing that House Atreides had disappeared.

Hand.

The battle sequences, the hand-to-hand combat are impressive, the worms, which are under the desert and attack, seem bigger than in the first.

The “Elvis” actor and Anya Taylor-Joy

Vlodimir’s new nephew appears, played by Aston Butler (Elvis), clean-shaven as befits the family and War Boy, his character. There’s a whole twist about certain relationships, and be careful, don’t sleep a moment of the two hours and forty-six minutes because yes, Anya Taylor-Joy appears. She is an important character, but her presence is very brief.

Frank Herbert, born October 8, 1920, published Dune in 1965. It was the first science fiction novel with multiple points of view and also ecological. Five more books followed, so Villeneuve would have had enough to devote himself to the style of James Cameron Avatars.

The next book by Dune which would be adapted, if the franchise continued, something extremely likely, it’s literally titled The Messiah of Duna. And the messianic rise of Paul, who grows up and isn’t so young anymore, but makes adult decisions and becomes an action hero, is as well-crafted as the epic moments. Paul himself warns that “Arrakis must be delivered by his own people.” They were? Is he a future Jesus or what?

The answer is in the film, and certainly in the sequel. Dune It’s a story that combines science fiction, religion, ecology, an extraordinary production and a dozen famous actors leading the cast.

Oh, and there are no post-credits scenes.
