This Friday, March 15, it premiered on Star+ Coppola, the representativethe new series starring Juan Minujin which follows the story of Guillermo Esteban Coppolathe former manager of Diego Armando Maradona.
The series begins in Naples, in the mid-80s, a few months before the World Cup that celebrated Diego. In each episode we enter a different moment in time six 45-minute episodesin order to have a general overview of who this eccentric character is.
A different style from the traditional biopic
Something very particular about this series is the way it chose to tell the story of “Guillote”. They moved away from the biopic traditional to capture the true essence of the main character.
They selected the most unusual anecdotes that the media representative told throughout his life and brought them to the small screen, just as Coppola himself told them on television programs.
It makes sense that this is so, because anecdotes about celebrity, luxuries and crazy conflicts at the height of Diego Maradona’s fame are the first thing that comes to Argentinians’ minds when they mention Coppola.
So much so that, even today, when you search for his name on YouTube, the first things that appear are collections of his compelling offbeat stories.
They don’t show Maradona
Without a doubt one of the riskiest decisions and the one that attracts the viewer’s attention the most Maradona’s absence for the entire series. It is constantly mentioned, it is part of all the anecdotes, and the main character leaves everything to himself. But we will never be able to see it.
Even when he should be on screen, we only see Coppola’s reactions to “El Diego’s” attitudes. Maradona is the center of the story, but all the stories that are presented about him are left to the imagination of the viewer.
In some ways, this gave added value to the series: it really focuses on Coppola’s story, on his point of view and on his way of living the decade of which, without a doubt, he was the protagonist.
A protagonist who does not disappoint
As we are used to, Juan Minujín did it an exceptional job. Besides the fact that his physical transformation is very well done (with the wig and makeup that characterized him), I manage to capture every eccentric characteristic of the character.
You can see an energetic Coppola full of the mischievousness and lack of mincing words that characterize him.
Geographically, the series is set in Argentina and Italy, a country where Maradona’s representative had to move to closely follow in the footsteps of his client (who was not very easy to manage from afar).
For this reason there are scenes in which the actor The marginal it had to be done entirely in Italian. Not only did he succeed, but he has never lost that particular essence with which Guillermo Coppola negotiates, manipulates and operates in all areas.
The dedication, the mischievous, the excessive. Minujín managed to convey all this perfectly. He has funny, tense and absurd moments, just like the main character. The series is very fast paced and watched quickly. He is one of those who deserve a marathon.
Among the characters present in the series, there are many famous Argentinians. Among them Susana Giménez (María Campos), “Yuyito” González (Mónica Antonópulos), Carlos Menem Jr. (Agustín Sullivan), Karina Rabolini (Maria del Cerro) and even Poli Armentano (Joaquín Ferreira). They are all part of the unusual anecdotes from Guillermo Coppola’s life.
The series is definitely like its protagonist: playful, frivolous and fun. No doubt something fun to watchespecially for those who want to relive the era.
